Is it normal i swear at my child?

I'm a mother of a little girl in kindergarten. I seem to have this problem though: I swear at her.... A LOT.

I can tell it makes her a little upset but I just can't help it. One day she left a Barbie on the floor and I accidentally stepped on it and snapped it in half, it hurt my foot and I told my daughter "Come pick up this motherfucking Barbie right damn now!" She started crying and ran in to the room to come pick it up.

Another time she dropped her apple juice and I blew my top and let out a powerful stream of curse words. Again she started crying because I scared her. It broke my heart to see her cry like that, I hugged her and promised to never cuss at her again.

I've just been under so much stress lately, I'm a single mother because my husband left me for some whore and I work two jobs. I have the weekends off, but when I'm at work my brother watches and cares for her.

I just want to stop swearing at my poor little sweetie because I don't want her using my language. It's not lady-like.

Please help me.

I think anger management wouldn't be a bad idea. My partner left me too when my youngest of 3 was 5 months old. I run my own small business from home and resent that my ex doesn't even see his kids let alone help. But shouting and swearing at your kid will only serve to damage the relationship between you as well.

Get a counselor they might be able to help :) when u start to say something to ur daughter, think about it first. I'm fairly impulsive and the term "look before you leap" has helped me avoid a LOT of bad situations.

You Stinkhorn! (It's a type of edible phallic mushroom) You don't seem to realise how sensitive child are and how easy it is for them to be traumatised. If you keep breaking your promises how will she be able to trust you? You need Anger management or some other form of therapy.

You sound just like my ma. Her favorite sentence was, "Why can't you do a fuckin thing right, you fuckin cunt?"

It effected my language a lot. Im constantly dropping the F-bomb and other vulgaries around people of all ages, and it sometimes upsets them. Not to mention the fact your kid is probably gonna have fucked up emotional issues. Please, for the sake of your kid, and yourself, get some help.

It's nothing to do with being lady-like. Fuck lady-like. Just try to be gentler with her.

Looks like there are no decent ladies left in society :(
People have no class these days.

I'm a guy and I never swear in front of my family because I have a thing called decency. I'd expect that level of decency much more from a lady than from other guys.
Ladies shoudn't be rough and rude, they should conduct themselves in a graceful manner.

At least OP understands that concept and is trying.

    • I just get so angry sometimes ): and I realize its not her fault. Nothing is, its just me taking out my aggression on the first person I see. That's not right at all.

What makes swearwords any more special than other words?
Ultimately they're just words. They add no more value or meaning to your speech.
"Come pick up this motherfucking Barbie right damn now!" and
"Come pick up this Barbie right now!" have the same meaning, the only difference being that the former portrays you as someone that has no class.
Once you realize that, and that realization sets in, you may find it easier to stop.

The other issue is the one that "KatieLiz" brought up:
Small children are sensitive to these things - even without the cussing, you should avoid shouting at her.

Lastly, I'll have to agree with what "moomus" said:
        Anger Management.
You really need to learn not to get upset over trivial matters like this.
Children will be children and accidents will happen.
Reserve the shouting for when you encounter a deliberate act of hostility on her part.

        • When you put it like that it makes me want to absolutely STOP swearing. I don't want ny daughter to be fearful of me. She's all I have and I need to make the best of things for her and treat her like the princess she is.

Is this suppose to be impressive? I thought all parents cussed when angry? Isn't this a normal thing? Mine usually did when they were angry with us. I just thought it was normal. Like men walking around in boxers. I never cussed though since my parents taught me it was bad for children to cuss. As well as most children in my my class not cussing till the 6th grade since it was considered an evil act.

Try and relax, this ain't good (for either one of you). Try and restraing yourself from making sailors blush. Or visit an anger management class. Or simply go for a bit of cycling. It can do wonders. I am hot headed too and a lot of things can make me boil. Problems at work. Idiot drivers. Internet problems. Arguing with girlfriend over some random crap... You know the normal stuff. Whenever i'm pissed, or angry about something, I take my bike and go for a 5-15km trip in the countryside. Gives me some time to think, some excercise and a chance to look at stuff and relax.
After the trip, I take a bath and I'm as fresh and good as a summer's day!

Now I am 90% sure that someone has said the same thing but anyway...
        1. You don't want your daughter to talk like (sorry for example) hood slut!
        2. You don't want your daughter to fear you. Some kids might develop some sort of fear from their parents. Don't shout at your children. They are just kids. Surely they'll get the message after calmly explaining a time or two...
My mother used to shout at me, and sometimes I shouted back. Didn't really work as a way of communicating...
Shouting at family doesn't work (Unless calling family for dinner!). Save the insults and screaming for the real people that annoy you!

Honestly I might sound too paranoid idk sorry but maybe u could think of something else? Might not be the best idea to get into the habit of kicking things when you're mad.. Just saying..

I used to swear too much! When I had my son I knew I had to stop! I basically replaced the words with gibberish which is sometimes embarrassing when your with adults. Fuck - fudge, motherfucker- muddyfudger, wanker - merchant banker, shit - sugar honey ice tea ( yes it spells shit still lol) cunt - see you next Tuesday etc, helps me! N means my son doesn't repeat anything! Plus I don't understand how you can have that level of rage towards your kid, he's about the only person who doesn't make me that livid, unless he does something that effects his safety eg trying to get out of me holding his hand n run into the road! Then I have lost it!

I understand that it's not always easy to raise a child alone. I won't blame you for swearing at your daughter, at least you know that this is a problem and I'm positive that you'll find a way to tackle it.

Get some help and stop hurting your own child. It'll affect her when she's older and she doesn't deserve it. It sounds like you have anger inside of you. Maybe from childhood traumas? Either way you can't keep expressing yourself like this in front of her...
