Is it normal i'm the only one that seems to remember what goth is?

I am 17 and Goth. People in my town, and most people I talk to have no idea what the real origins of the subculture are. When I say bands like Bauhaus, The Cure and The sisters of mercy are goth bands, they look at me with a weird glare. Usually declare they have no idea who they are, even though they call themselves Goth too. So is it weird to like 80's goth music, or know what Goth actually was?

I think when the emo phase came through it created some confusion over what goth is. I don't know why but people classified the two as one and the same.

    • What does that even mean? Just because he person is 17 doesn't mean they are fucking stupid.

Of course not. But officially this site is supposed to be 18+. No one seems to pay much attention to that, however.

        You just proved my point.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
      • I don't get why it matters either. I remember when I was a kid I would go on sites that said 18+ online all the time. It's not like there's any way to actually keep kids out. They have to put the notice for legal reasons. I doubt anyone ever thinks "oh no, I can't go to that website because of my age"

I am not very old, then again some people die at birth. So I guess it is a perspective game. In my town and even when I travel, people tend to have no clue what I am talking about. I guess people take fashion and run with it...without having knowledge. I guess it is easy to think what you see is reality.

I was going to say something funny but I'm quite impressed with this so I'm just going to say I'm quite impressed by this. There, I've said it now!

        You're right, by the way.

Well kid, I gotta give you mad props for preachin' the truth! I'm an 80's Generation Xer chick and I must say you know your stuff, my friend and it's hella refreshing!

Don't forget about Siouxsie and the Banshees. ;)

I agree, music from the 80's generation was amazing! Siouxsie and the Banshees is one of my favorite bands along with The Cure, The Cult, etc :)

None of that even matters. When I was "goth" it meant hating the people who called us "gothic". I'm still the same person I was then, only without the stupid label and a few more colors in my wardrobe.

I would have liked to help but I don't know what goth really is. Actually I thought it was just about dressing in only black and behaving strangely (vampire-like). In my country there are no goth. Teenagers prefer to dress normally.

I live in a tropical island, so people here don't dress in black that often. It would be a torture for someone to dress in black because even in winter it's hot.

  • 1. Everybody knows who "the cure" are, they're one of the most successful bands ever.

    2. No you are not the only one who remembers, Infact you aren't old enough to remember in the first place.

      1. I am not talking about just the fucking Cure. Your ability to be unnecessarily rude is one I have as well. I am talking about Rozz Williams, The sex Gang Children, Specimen and other bands that performed at the notorious Bat Cave.

      2. I think having prior knowledge of a subject is indeed considered memory. This is related to the word " remember". Therefore, I am educated on that subject matter.

      3. Before you think about being an internet dick, let me remind you that is my day job in real life. So, I have no problem telling some middle- age oaf to fuck off. Thanks for being a dick, and The Cure is Glam Goth. I am talking about the underground scene.

      • 1. You said "Bauhaus, The Cure and The sisters of mercy" not the other names you mention, so who cares. We only get what you say on screen remember.

        2. You were a toddler when the emos took over the goth thing. So no, you have no memory of the confusion or how it started. I was there, I even dated one goth during that time, I know.

        3. Something about a job?

          • I was being more polite than the "individual" I am conversing with, so not within the context of the conversation was I being rude. Not indulging an underage liar hardly constitutes being rude. Rather, I provide the service of telling you that you are full of shit so that somebody else doesn't have to.

            • You were being rude. Whether the person is 17 or 507, they had the right to defend themselves in the manner they did. You were not respectful...so why should they be?

I don't "remember" what it is, and i'm not sure how you would either considering you're younger than me, but I have read about what it actually is, fashion-wise mostly, i think it's pretty cool, but most people who try it today just wear unflattering hot topic clothes

However, you are correct about the terrible hot topic wardrobe. A very pretty Goth is Wednesday Mourning. She is on the show oddities.

It is not fashion based. It is a sub-culture. There is Goth rock. It was also a philosophy that was spread around the 80's as well. This is also when the music occurred. It manifested from post punk. Post punk manifested from punk. There for, beings that punk rock was political, Goth would have more meaning than fashion. The media has sadly deflated the minds of so many, people who think they are Goth tend to know nothing about what it is.

Teacher: Please tell me you aren't goth now, I think too highly of you for that.

Sorry to be picky, but I don't think I've ever heard of cigarettes referred to as "faggots" here in the UK. Fags, however, is used a lot where I am. Either way, don't waste your time with people who give useless answers. It's useless.

You only need to reply once, my black trenchoat wearing makeup enthusiast chum. But I see I've offended you, and although I do not apologize for it, I do understand. Having the compulsion to dress up like the crow and prance about in trappings that make you seem out of place even in a bdsm club would anger even me.
