Is it normal i'm still friends with a homeless man i met 35 years ago?

35 years ago outside of a grocery store, I was staring at this obese man because he smelled really bad. I was a bratty teenager so I held my nose around him and he surprised me by saying,
"Son, do you know why I smell so bad?" I was taken aback but I stopped and listened. He went on to tell me the story of his tragic life complete with abandonment, health problems, and unemployment. I felt bad, so I told him he could shower at my house and live in the basement. He said he wouldn't be able to fit in the shower, so I offered him the hot tub.

That's when it began. He would come by once a week and bathe in my hot tub while my parents were sleeping. It was a nice gesture but it never seemed enough. He was humble though, and refused to accept any housing. We also had a nice chat once a week, but I wished I could help him more.

It has been 35 years and he still comes by my new house once a week to bathe in my hot tub. I just wish I could have somehow helped him straighten out his life. Is it normal I didn't do anything to intervene...is it even normal that we are still in contact?

I think that's incredibly awesome. 35 years is a long time though, it's a shame his circumstances haven't changed since but it's cool that you still see him.

Seems like you did a nice thing for him. Sure maybe you could do more but you still did more than most. I think you can pat yourself on the back.
