Is it normal i'm losing passion for something i loved

I used to be really passionate about music, it was my life. I used to love playing and listening. Recently, I barely listen to music, I only play because I have to, not for pleasure and I don't know what to do!

Without blowing my own trumpet (I wish I played trumpet...), I'm a pretty good musician on a few instruments, but I've just lost the will to play anymore. I'm in a band and even on a music course and doing very well on it.

My whole life for the past 9-10 years has been based around music and I've just slowly lost interest. I feel like shit about it!

Is this normal to lose passion in something like music that you absolutely loved?

  • When I graduated high school I was into art. I went to art school on a scholarship, but became disillusioned with the curriculum and I didn't fit in with my peers.

The few times I picked up the charcoal since...nothing fell into place like it used to.

Maybe you should just keep it fun. Play as a hobby. Don't let pressure sour you on something you love.

Take my advice with a grain of salt though...it is obviously anecdotal.

I don't know if this is normal but I can certainly relate. I used to love soccer and baseball (watch and play) but nowadays my passion is gone. I wasn't even aware that this was happening to me.

My passion has shifted to other sports

Starting in 2010 I was really obsessed with Johnny Depp and his characters. Over the past year my passion for them has been on the decline. I was pretty upset about it for a long time because I never thought I'd be able to love other characters as much as I had loved them. But eventually I reached a point where I realized that, hey, it's my mind and I'm only hung up about it because I'm allowing myself to be, and I need to put more effort into trying other things. Now thoughts of Johnny Depp don't cross my mind nearly as often as they used to, almost to the point of not thinking of him at all (which is a HUGE step from where I used to be, which was a constant state of panic going "omg I'm not obsessed with him anymore what do I do now?!?")

I still don't have a new obsession yet (although a couple of things look promising), but the biggest difference now is that I'm no longer desperate about it.

    • Thank you for your comment. I don't mean to offend you and your interests, but I don't think an obsession with Johnny Depp is on the same level as a passion for music. I guess it must be to you, but music is such an amazing thing (yes, Mr. Depp is too) but not in the same way!

It's scary to experience, but i think it's normal. I think inspiration comes and go. Plus if you have obligation to play music, for a course or band, it's maybe the reason why you lost interest in it. Being forced to play when you don't really feel like it may have to do with the lost of interest. I'm an artist too and i like to draw when i feel like it, when it makes me happy or when i'm inspired. I think you should take a little break and try it again when you feel ready. It always worked this way for me anyway :p. ( sorry for the grammar error)

    • Thanks but I can't have a break. I need to go to practices otherwise I would be a bad band member and I need to play in college.

It is hard to keep the motivation alive sometimes. Maybe it is your time to find a new passion, yeah?
