Is it normal i'm irritated by some of the supporters?
There's been an outpouring of support for the consideration of mental illness since the recent death of Robin Williams.
On one hand, I think the awareness it brings to mental health issues is helpful, but I also cannot help but feel a bit resentful. I feel this way because many of these people who are speaking up about it are all talk and no action when it comes to supporting their own friends who are suffering from depression. As someone who went through a debilitating depression not so long ago, I know the majority of them truly do not give any fucks.
When I came out and finally admitted that I was depressed and was seriously considering ending it all, 33% of my friends withdrew and 42% disappeared entirely. It was very difficult to admit my problem to them and I only said anything at all as a last resort. Their indifference sent a message that I was not deserving of hope and would not be missed when I checked out. Fortunately for me and much to my surprise, two friends did show sincere concern. Their consistent care and love helped me find hope while I recovered. I am incredibly grateful for their support.
If you know someone who is depressed, there are ways to help them. You won't be able to fix them, but you can check in with them frequently and let them know:
- You care about them.
- They are important to you.
- You will always be there for them.
Whatever you do, don't tell them to cheer up or be more grateful for what they have, it's counter-productive and will only make them feel worse.
