Is it normal i literally can't put in a tampon?

Yes, I know where my vagina is. Yes, I've tried relaxing. Yes, I've tried Lite tampons.

It's so painful and weird. The tampon just won't go in, and even attempting to put it in hurts a lot. I don't know how you do it, y'all people who do this shit 3-6 times a day, 7 days a month, for 30-40 years.

Let alone people who have sex, or masturbate. How can you stand it? Either I have a low pain tolerance or there's something wrong with my vagina. I'm going to be a virgin for the rest of my life kthxbye.

When you insert things into the vagina the hymen doesn't literally break - if it does, you're doing it very wrong. However, the hymen does need to stretch to accommodate larger objects like tampons or dildos or penises, and it might need to stretch a lot because everyone's body is different. To stretch the hymen in the least painful way possible you should use a lot of lube. If that doesn't work, stop trying; tampons are supposed to improve your life, not hurt you.

From my knowledge, it could be the type of hymen you have. Some women's hymen aren't even opened enough to accommodate a simple tampon. You might need to take a look down there and see if it's a small opening. If it is, you may want to use pads for now and wait until after you lose your virginity to wear tampons. If not that, you should just try to force it more and maybe put water around it. It might be uncomfortable the first few tries but it should eventually just slide into place without any pain.

You say I should maybe wait, (the hole seems pretty small down there, but is there another way? I do tumbling and dance and it is hard to do active stuff with a pad. Also I find pads uncomfortable.

I don't know about water, how about KY jelly instead?

True but I didn't want to suggest that because I don't think she's a virgin and probably didn't have that in her house. KY jelly would work well for sure or any lube.

Yes, I just can't get tampons in no matter what. It's frustrating when everyone else just assumes you're doing something wrong and not that tampons just aren't for you.

I agree with previous posters - it's probably a relatively common physical problem that might, in an extreme scenario, require some surgical intervention. But there're so many different things that can make vaginal penetration difficult for women - go ahead and ask your doctor about it.

For example, some women develop a problem called vaginismus where, try as they might, they can't relax their vaginal walls enough to put anything up there. It's technically classified as a psychological problem but I think of it more like an unpleasant reflex - I mean, why wouldn't your body try to prevent you from sticking stuff up there? It can feel really weird, especially when you're not aroused.

I don't mean to imply that you have vaginismus - more likely, you're just super tight. In any case, if you do ask a doctor, I guarantee it won't be the first or last time that someone asks them about tampon insertion.

  • I had the same problem! I really thought I would NEVER be able to correctly put in a tampon, but now I can.

Okay so I'm just going to give you advice and it might be TMI but here goes. LOL. It worked for me.

Wash your hands and lie down. If you've been masturbating this won't be anything new lol. Put one or two fingers inside you. Feel around inside. I know it sounds ridiculous, but if you can put two whole fingers inside (deep, trying pushing in as far as you can) you can wear a tampon. Once you've assured yourself you can do that, get the tampon and take it out of the applicator (for practice). Try inserting it with your fingers, positioning and arranging your fingers however you need. If you put the tampon in and you can still feel it, reach inside and push it in further. ALSO the tampon may be crooked (painful) so try to straighten it out. The tampon should be vertical with your body, string hanging down.
Once you've done it without the applicator, try with the applicator. Same idea. You may still need to reach in with your fingers.
The angle is very important when using a tampon. If you can still feel the tampon, like I said earlier, the angle is wrong and it's crooked.

    • Thanks, this is one of the most helpful comments I've read so far. And no it's not TMI.

I'll try it next month lol.

Okay, firstly, don't wet the tampon, because that will cause it to absorb some of the water and increase in size. I'm not sure if lubricants will do the same thing (I suppose it depends on the type), but if you use any sort of lubrication that ISN'T water soluble, it will stop the tampon from absorbing blood.

As for why it's so difficult, it could be down to your hymen, as many people have already mentioned, but it could also be what time of your period you're trying to use them at. If you're at a point where your flow is lighter, then you may find them more difficult to insert.

Other things I'd suggest would be: making sure you have the right absorbency for your flow; the right size (i.e. girth) for your body, and trying out applicator/non-applicator tampons, if you haven't already.

If that doesn't work, then you may just be one of the few (like moi) who can't use them - in which case, stick to pads!

I’m worried that I can’t use them though because I do dance and tumbling and pads don’t really work when you’re doing something active :(

Yeah, most women go through at least 16 tampons each month. TMI warning: The first day is comparative to a waterfall.

I agree that tampons are nicer but the OP is complaining about tampons, saying she's tried everything, so I offered a simple solution.

Of course it's going to be difficult to put in when your hymen is intact. Everyone's hymen is different, pain threshold, blah blah blah. You wanna be celibate thats fine

It could also be that you have difficulty producing lubrication.

It could be your hymen, that is if it hasn't already been broken. If it has, it could be that your canal is very tight.

    • Lol. Your hymen isn't a piece of skin that breaks when you lose your virginity and then is gone forever. That's a myth. Look up Laci Green's Hymen 101 video, it's really useful.

when you are struggling with a tampon the best thing to do is to squat down and try it like that .. it's definitely like 100% easier than any other position :)
