Is it normal i know so many people with traumatic childhoods?

I would imagine most people know somebody with a bad past but a lot of people have opened up to me about their problems, which I am glad to be somebody they can talk to, but I often don't know what to say.
I respect peoples privacy which is why I've been hesitant to bring up this topic, but I will give vague descriptions without too much information to give an idea.

I know numerous people who were molested by their parents or another caregivers. Some parents even let others do the same.

I know numerous people who were physically abused and even tortured by their parents or caregivers. Some examples are burned on the stove, held in boiling water, made to stand on nails, having their eyes ripped out, and having siblings killed.

I know a few whose parents got them hooked on hard drugs very early on even giving them drugs such as meth to bring to school and sell.

I know numerous people who were emotionally abused such as kidnapped or forced to watch people be brought into the house to be murdered.

The people who have told me these stories became my friends in a world that mostly rejected me growing up.
I felt homicidal much of the time and still often do, not for my own needs but because it upset me that the ones who accepted me were the ones who were hurt. I felt obsessed with society being my enemy.

I'm realizing I need to let my hate go because life is to short to focus on hatred.

There's probably something about your personality that either attracts the damaged or allows them to open up. Maybe your a good listener, or you ask a lot of questions, or maybe these people recognize something in you that allows them to speak freely, something that they relate to.

This is true, I too attract the broken and the lost ones because somehow they like my company.

    • I don't ask people personal questions but I'm a good listener and people say I am easy to be around.

Besides myself, I only know two people who have had bad childhoods.

Were your friends from another culture? How could their eyes be ripped out and no one would say anything? Its not that I don't believe you, it's that I'm curious.

    • The examples I gave are people from all over the place, some from other cultures. I don't want to get too into anybody elses personal information, but I will say the person who lost their eyes as a kid due to abuse is from a third world country. I believe something was said because they were adopted here after it happened.

growing up I was always attracted to the lesser lights of society because there is a lot of strength in adversity and I feel these people are more street smart and less naïve about society.

There are a lot of people out there who are horrible parents and should have never been parents. It's normal in that anyone can potentially have sex and reproduce and do something horrible to those children. However, it's really sad :(

    • I wonder why anybody would want to have sex with a person like that in the first place.

Good question bugsforbreakfast, but it seems the most horrible, cruel and vile people have no problem getting laid.

Its good to let you hate go...but my gawd where did you grow up??? Or where did your friends grow up??? This is like extreme cases of abuse. I do not think its normal to have so many people with such extreme cases.
I myself was abused...beaten physicaly(one of my moms husbands she left him). I know a few people here or there in my life that have had abuse but not as extreme as yours and not a lot.

    • Near Seattle although some of these events happened elsewhere to people who later came here, a couple from weird countries. I wasn't abused myself and while my parents weren't perfect they didn't do too bad. It was when I started making friends in high school some would tell me fucked up stories. I know for certain at least most these stories were not made up by evidence of peoples injuries or seeing news articles, etc. There seems to be a pretty bad meth problem here too but I'm not sure if that is everywhere. I am also in the music industry which seems to attract people who don't have good lives.

Ah yeah drugs can be a cause for abuse along with other countries unfortunately...in high school where I was the drug of choice was weed and the place has a ridiculously low crime rate.

        • Weed doesn't really count. It's even legal where I live. Meth is pretty popular here and there is a little bit of heroin and cocaine as well but not as much as the meth problem. Luckily I do not live in a methy neighborhood at the moment.
