Is it normal i just roll my eyes whenever someone claims to be autistic?

Seriously though. Is claiming to be autistic a new trend or cool thing to be for kids and young adults these days? I am not saying there are not any autistic people suffering out there. But I do think that for every seriously afflicted person on the spectrum there are like 10 dumbasses who are falsely diagnosed by lazy doctors or just classify themselves as aspergers or autistic as an excuse for just being awkward or not trying to socialize better. It is easier to just claim mild autism rather than just admitting you are slightly weird or have a bit of social anxiety. Nothing wrong with acting awkward in social situations sometimes. It is normal and does not always mean you have a clinical disorder or problem.

I know I sound mean or ignorant right now. I know mental illnesses and developmental disorders exist and many peopld suffer from them. I just think the trend to make false claims of being autistic or having other disorders is an increasg trend. Not to mention the overprescribed psych medicine being thrown at us from all directions for every tiny issue. It makes it easier for people to throw their percieved "disorder" in other faces in order to not be held entirely accountable for their actions. I know that some people really do suffer. But I really do believe that a lot of people are becoming less and less willing to try and take responsibility for their issues and try to chamge themselves. Is it normal that I feel this way? Or do you think I am an asshole?

The sort of people you're describing give people with genuine disabilities a bad name but I fail to see how you can tell which are which. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I must admit that I do know people who believe they're "on the spectrum" who basically have a few difficulties relating to other people some of the time ...... just like the rest of us?

Anyway, I'd prefer others to let me know what their specific difficulties are if it's relevant: the terms used for "spectrum people" are meaningless anyway bc they can mean just about anything. Years ago it was common to say someone was having a "nervous breakdown" and I learned to ask what was actually happening for the person or her/his behavior because that's a similarly meaningless term.

I pretty much agree with you. There was a post last week from someone who WANTED to have autism! For almost the exact reasons you posted.
I'm at a loss to understand that sort of thinking. Might just as well become a born again something and give all responsibility for one's life to some nonexistent mythical being. Same results.

I mostly agree but it's really pretty much impossible to know who is who out there. I think a lot of kids, teens, young adults (whatever) get diagnosed with all sorts of things like A.D.D or A.D.H.D when really all they have is L.A.Z.Y.

Until there becomes a less subjective way to understand these issues there really isn't much that can be done.
