Is it normal i have problems with noise

Last year, I was in a flat and there was so much noise from the neighbours, that I barely topped 2 hours sleep per night for 6 weeks. The floorboards above my head creaked very loudly day and night from neighbours moving around and a toddler running around, the man next door snored so loudly, that it reverberated through the wall and woke me up, the TV downstairs was on until the wee small hours and a clock somewhere in the building struck every quarter of an hour. Every single night was like water torture; every single night I moved rooms about three times to try and sleep to no avail. White noise didn't work, earplugs hurt and failed anyway since my body felt all the vibrations and even a Tibetan hat with earplugs, a sleeping bag hood and white noise (in the height of summer!) had little effect. My health suffered and I had to move out after only 6 weeks and lost loads of money doing so. Had I had a job, I could not have held it down as the sleep deprivation made me very ill.

I now live in a quiet place but will soon have to move to somewhere where I can work, which will mean living in a flat or bedsit as I cannot afford a house. However, even now, I bolt awake at the slightest sound. It is as if I have some kind of PTSD after the experience and I cannot sleep with my partner. We joke that I need a soundproof box to sleep in but that is actually very much the truth. Places are built so flimsily and the noise of modern life is so great, that I simply cannot sleep with it all and it makes me very seriously ill. I don't even crash out from sheer exhaustion!

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Did you find a solution?

Try earmuffs, those things that cover your eyes, or something like that. I don't really have an answer for you. Maybe you SHOULD just buy a soundproof box...?
