Is it normal i find it ironic people can eat chocolate yet have to cook food?

I find it ironic that we can eat things like chocolate which kill other animals, yet are the only creature on this planet that has to cook its food? The one thing we seem to be able to eat raw is fish. Even with this however there has been sushi incidents where people have gotten worms.

It's fascinating what we can eat that other species can't and vice versa. If you look at the diets of our closest living relatives, they eat far tougher stuff than we can handle, and not just because chimps and gorillas don't have kitchens.

If you really want your mind blown, read up on how cooking might be intricately intertwined with our intellectual development. Some scientists have theorized that cooking food and deriving more calories from it was the fuel that allowed our big brains to develop. Google "Cooking and human evolution," and you'll find a lot of great sources (National Geographic, Harvard Science, Journal of Human Evolution).

    It's fascinating stuff!

We cook food mostly to decrease the chance of any bacteria surviving to infect us. We can truthfully eat most things raw; the aftereffects may be catastrophic though.

If you've never wondered why house pets live considerably longer than most of their wild counterparts, this is a large chunk of the reason.

    • Well in the wild they also are hunted, have no medical care, and if they get an injury too deep they usually just die. So that is another factor so I don't think we can blame it all on one thing. Its like comparing us to someone from the middle ages. If they had an infection they usually amputated the entire limb, if they got sick they died. That and we give animals shots to prevent things like worms, and rabies. Which if not given these vaccine are very capable of getting on the streets or in the wild.

As we evolved, so did the bacteria that inhabit our guts.

Humanity has long lost our ability to eat large amounts of raw meat mostly because we've begun evolving to eating cooked foods, for example our appendix used to produce very strong acids that helped primitive man digest raw meat but since we began cooking our food the appendix slowly lost its function and has been shrinking through the generations, as if it will one day vanish from human anatomy all together
