Is it normal i find it annoying when a singer is referred to as an artist?

A singer is a singer. An artist is an artist. They are separate in my mind. A singer just sings. THAT'S IT. Where does the art come in? Give me a break. is it normal to feel this way?

I got pissed off when they referred to people who make sandwiches at Subway as artists. Go to hell (them, not you).

What if the singer wrote the song?

    • Yeah writing isn't an art form. It's fucking writing. Am I an artist for just writing that? I could make a tune to it as well for you.

The arts covers a lot more than just painting.

How would you define art, then? Just painting? If so, that is an extremely narrow view you have.

        • Didn't say it was just painting, but continue. Please tell me about my narrow mind. I'm curious.

your reply comment made me laugh! :)

Here's a quote i think holds true to this discussion:

"From the point of view of form, the type of all the arts is the art of the musician. From the point of view of feeling, the actor's craft is the type." -Oscar Wilde

Everyone who has a some sort of performance skill and is halfway decent wants to be considered an artist. To me, someone has to be REALLY good before I consider them an artist. But I know that's not technically correct, but to each his own

Well music is an art form.
You know, I love Bayside, but I also love Anthony Raneri as a solo artist. Yes, I said it.

It doesn't bother me. I don't think "art" should apply just to visual arts myself.

and i noticed that Mando's entry shows that even the dictionary agrees

I dislike the terms recording artist and performing artist. I don't know why we have to keep changing people's job titles. Everyone knows what singer and actor mean. And nanny, for instance. Why call them tertiary juvenile caregiving specialists when nanny covers it?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • blackalica

because "art" overlaps more things then you think. anything that really needs imagination or great skill is virtually considered art.

Sorry, but great singers have artistry, like Beverly Sills, Luciano Pavarotti, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas, Victoria de los Angeles, Jussi Bjoerling, Placido Domingo; and even Tony Bennett and his ilk.

They are artists, not karaoke hacks.

Not artists. There are songwriters that could be word artists that "paint" a feeling. I'm not even sure if writers are artists, but just wordsmiths.

I'm a Bauhaus guy and the philosophy of Gropius is that artists are craftsman first. Only when the craft is outstanding that it becomes art. (Its great because then slime that produce crap and call it art aren't artists because they have no craft.) So is anyone that does their craft to such a degree an artist? I don't think so. A baker that does amazing things is still a baker. Art implies more than that — even Gropius changed his mind.

The problem is the media and pop culture. it makes superheros out of some good looking kid because the recording studio can modify his/her voice. Then the media is all over it for all the ET and TMZ watchers out there. These people are raised to some god-like status, and artist is a fairly lofty title. I'm an artist, not by my calling, but by other artists that tell me so.

I agree. Writers are writers. Singers are singers. Artists are artists. I know that they will still always be called artists, but it annoys me. :Y

wait a minute....that's a good question, is porn art? not sure.... it wouldn't require much skill....not alot of imagination just "stick that in there". what does everyone else think?

I think it depends on the singer, like if they both sing and write their songs. But even with that in mind, I think it also depends on the lyrics themselves, and the music.

I voted yes for it being normal only because it annoys me too. Just for a different reason. I wouldn't call Britney Spears an artist. She doesn't write her own songs. And in my eyes she's a singer by profession not by skill. Just like T-Pain. More than anything she is a performer. I think that in popular music (aka pop music not referring to all mainstream stuff) anyone is marketable with the right smoke and mirrors. Few artists have any skill. Off the top of my head I can only think of Adele as a true pop artist, singer and performer. Simply because she writes her own music, shes a great singer (sans autotune!) and she performs it. I truly believe that there are more artists in Indie, in Rock and in Rap than any other genres

It's all subjective anyway. What is art or artistic to one person is absolute rubbish to another. I could call Carl Orff or Bizet artists and think that Rihanna is a waste of space. Both use music as a form of expression (although that may be questionable with Rihanna). What about comparing Tracey Emin with Waterhouse? Both are considered artists (apparently).

With singers out there like Nicki Minaj or Keisha (I'm not quite sure how to do the stylized spelling of it), I can see why you would feel that way.

While I find it normal that you feel that way towards singers that exploit the work of their song-writers and their auto-tune machines and still gain more respect than genuine artists, it's not really right to feel that way about ALL singers. In fact, some, if not MOST of them actually DO take pride in the art of verbal expression and the poetic and artistic value of their song and writing.

Artists tend to sell out quickly though. Can you blame them? That industry can make you wealthy for many generations to come if you play your cards right...

I agree with kyanviado music is a form of art. Art is a way of expressing yourself. So is singing, writing, dancing and so on. So in my eyes a singer is an artist. (:

haha I'm the opposite. An actor to me is just a person who acts. I don't see why we have to differentiate between the sexes with everything. I think they say both because in the dictionary it doesn't say it's a male who acts it says it's a person who acts.

I totally agree. In English we have very few male specific and female specific nouns, which is good in my opinion; it makes things a little less complicated, less segregated. A doctor, a nurse, a hairdresser, a musician, a teacher, a writer... an actor!

I think this trend of using non-gender specific nouns should continue where differentiation isn't necessary... For example waitresses should also be called waiters.

        YEAH!

  • I think its normal unless the singer writes their own songs. The singer has a voice, which is sort of like an instrument. You wouldn't call a cello player an artist just because they can play a prewritten piece. They have to compose something to be an artist.
