Is it normal i don't know what to do when people sing happy birthday to me

I never know what to do when a group of people are singing happy birthday to me. Most of the time I just quickly glance around the room and then end up staring at the candles on the cake and hoping I don't screw up in blowing them out or spit all over the cake.

...I have social anxiety as well, something I'm sure contributes to my awkwardness...

What do (or would) you do when (if) people sing (...sang) happy birthday to you?

I find that song cringeworthy and often sang out of duty not celebration. I just smile like a goof and try to hide my discomfort

Your reaction sounds like the same reaction everyone has has.

How about the unbirthday song? It'll be awesome! There will be tea and crumpets and jam and mustard. Of course the Mad Hatter and March hare will be there. And the little dormouse. Yay!!!

I take part in the singing and clapping, expect I go "Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday dear meeee, happy birthday to me! Yay meeee!!!". Sometimes I also jump up and down a little. :(

Just smile and blow out the candles when they're done singing but don't forget to make a wish.

I figured it out. You are supposed to plaster a smile, tilt your head, keep saying "AWWWWWWW" in your head and cut the cake ASAP and stuff their mouths with it.

Ain't nobody got time for waitin'

The same used to happen all those years ago when I still had parties. Very awkward. .. Awkward even more so, when it is just coming from your mother and her mother. What is one supposed to do when this happens? If you look at the floor, your actions might be interpreted as rude unless, you can feign shyness. If you divert your eyes away from them and look at some fixed point elsewhere, they'll more than likely be curious to know what it is that has caught your fancy. I don't think that it can be avoided unless you insist that you have a small party and that know one must sing.

Find someone famous who has the same birthday as you and take the opportunity to sing the song to them. If you're born on 20th April, Adolf Hitler is your go-to guy. Or George Takei. They're much of a muchness so either will do.

Actually, go Takei, it rhymes better with birthday.
