Is it normal i don't get giving tips to waiters

Sorry, I just don't. I've been told I have no heart, and I read that a waitress remembered those who didn't tip and treated them badly from then on. Why would you be hospitable just for money? Isn't it part of the job? Despite little pay, there are many jobs with little pay.

In America, waiters and waitresses are paid far below minimum wage...I think last time I checked the average was around $4-5 an hour, before tax. This system is supposed to engourage waiters to give the best service possible, but ultimately ends up fucking someone who has an exhausting job out of a fair wage because of cheap assholes like you.

True story, I got some washing done when I was in the states, and I was told to pay the person who brought your items back to you $1 each piece of clothing. I had a few beers and tipped the lady $5 and she almost did a back flip, was incredibly grateful and left. I realized in my drunken state I gave her $50 instead :P

Yes I have heard that this is what happens in the US which sucks completely.

Here in Australia, the waiting staff still get low wages but that depends on the sort of establishment that employs them. The bigger restaurants pay more of course.

That being said, I try to always leave a tip of some sort unless the service is very poor or food not good. And if it is exceptional service, the bigger the tip. It is the right thing to do.

I don't believe in tipping either unless the job IS paid below min. wage, which is not always the case in America, contrary to what some are saying here. I think it's really shitty that on top of paying good money for a meal, companies are cheap asses who are essentially making their customer pay their employees wages!

Tipping isn't a common thing in New Zealand.

I didn't know that the waiting staff can be paid below minimum wage in the United States until I was told by someone else on IIN. At the moment I'm visiting the US and Canada and I have been tipping people when necessary.

This probably explains why I feel that the service has been above average from what I get back home.

I do get annoyed when a waiter approaches me and asks me how my meal is going, etc.

I would hate the idea of going to work and wondering if I'm going to get enough to get bread on the table.

Everybody I know tip and so do I because I know they are paid below minimum wage and they could not live without the tip we give them. Nonetheless, I think the restoration company is the one winning in this situation. They get away with paying their employees miserable salaries and making the public pay half and even more of their waiters wage. They are cheap bastard, but it's not ready to change so until that day we will tip them.

As I understand it, the low wages are based on people tipping, and from that perspective, I think people should tip. I'm from a country where tipping isn't usual. I did hear of a restaurant (I think it was in the States) that had made tipping unnecessary by paying the waitresses/waiters a proper salary.

Where I live (not the USA) tipping is usually only given for service that is excellent. Most wait staff get paid reasonably well ($15 - $20 / hour and more on weekends)

Being waited on is a service. You're paying the waiter for their service, the food is separate. If you were only paying for the food, you would not have a waiter at all. You tip because you are thanking them for their service. Them waiting on you and you tipping them is equal parts hospitality. Them giving you your food is them saying 'Welcome' and you giving them extra money is saying 'Thank you for your service'. The only reason they get paid a wage at all is so you aren't giving more than you can afford as a thank you. The only place you shouldn't be tipping people is their own house, because they're being hospitable on their own time so it doesn't affect them. If nobody tipped their waiters, they'd stop waiting- not because they don't like to help, but because they would have to find a place to work that would enable them to worry more about feeding themselves which is more important than someone else not getting off their ass to feed themselves, really.

        • I put up the question to see whether there were others like me, and also to be enlightened as to its purpose. What that's got to do with you telling others how to rule their lives I don't know.
