Is it normal i don't get controlling people who get violent?

You know the very dominant, possessive, controlling type that get violent when their partner doesn't behave according to what they say. I don't really get it.

I understand the part about being controlling and possessive I myself am very possessive of any girl I date, I even try to restrict what outfits they wear in public, their manners, ect... I understand that part.

I don't get the being violent part, I've never raised a hand to any girl for not doing what I wanted, If we couldn't work things out I'd just end the relationship and look for someone else who would give me what I wanted.
