Is it normal i can't stand when someone answers the phone with their name?

I work for a customer service center where I make at least 100 calls a day. For some reason I just cringe when people answer the phone with their name. I think it just sounds pompous.

If it is the person at a business then it is only standard that you answer the phone with your name. Maybe the people you are calling are also using the phone you are calling for not only personal use but business use as well. Think about that next time it happens.

My pet peeve is when you are calling another professional and you have specific information you need and they slow the process by asking how are you? Any plans this weekend? I always get annoyed because I don't want to talk about me, I just want the damn info I called for.

It can depend on where the person is from/where they grew up. My mother grew up in Germany, where people answer the phone with their surname, so that's what she does.

In a business environment it's fairly standard practice to answer the phone with one's name. However, it irks me when people who are making a call to a business, say: "John Smith, please" instead of: "May I please speak with John Smith." The former sounds brusque to me.

Some people like to feel important by doing that but hey, whatever works...

yes, could feel strange if u both had the same name. you'd think they had ESP. my unfavorite is for someone to say 'how are we?" when there's only us 2 there. annoying
