Is it normal i am considering stealing from my job?

I've been honest in my past of course I believe stealing is wrong but I'm debating who is really stealing here. When I was hired I was pretty much promised a raise after my 1 year review, I have been model employee, always do extra always cover when people don't show up . I even come to work after a serious burn ... I feel lied to and feel like if I steal say, a dollar for every hour I work then were even. I feel they stole from me and I'm just taking it back. I wouldn't do it if I thought I'd get caught there are ways...
Crappy job to promise raise then not give it.

  • Update, Ive decided to just let it go and not bother stealing. Ive not been a criminal in my life so I guess I shouldn't start now. I will look for another job but till I find one I will let them know Im not happy about my lack of promised raise. Thanks for everyones advice.

If you want a raise, go talk to the boss. Step up. Show courage, leadership and initiative. That will get you the raise. If you really are that good, you deserve it. But, hiding and stealing is very cowardly. "Oh, they will pay for not giving me that raise. I will steal a dollar every day!"
I have no respect for cowardly thieves! I hate thieves in general, but that's different.

Now, if you plan on ripping someone off (at work) to get money, that's different. Go for it! Ripping people off and getting paid for it... One of capitalism's perks XD

I suppose the whole world does revolve around you, but have you stopped to consider that with the world economy as it is today, perhaps promises made a year ago could be impossible to keep now? Alternately, perhaps you haven't been the model employee you think you have been, and this post may be indicative of that.
And just a head's up, "wouldn't do it if I thought I'd get caught", you just don't sound smart enough to do this without getting caught, so perhaps the quote below is something you might want to consider; “The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one.” - Oscar Wilde

I think they sound perfectly smart.

Someone considering stealing at all, isn't someone I would consider particularly smart.

How is it not smart? I fail to understand. Let's see, they won't get caught and they'll regain money they lost. I think that's pretty smart.

Yeah, I think it's more smart than not.

    • Maybe the economy is down because employers pay people so little we can't afford to buy things!
Btw I had an excellent review I was told the company simply didn't make enough of a profit increase. Which is bull$&@?

It's normal to *feel* like you need to get back, but that won't solve the problem and you'll just risk getting fired or even getting a criminal record.

Have you talked to your boss about this promised raise? Just ask why you haven't gotten it and what you could do to get it.

Chances are, with this attitude you have right now, you're only making things worse, productivity-wise.

I have a different manager than when I was hired and shes only been her a few weeks so I don't think it will do any good.
The reason they gave is that the company didn't make so much percent over their expected goal. Bleh.

Look at it from their point of view. Yeah, it's extremely frustrating, but it's absolutely possible that they simply can't afford it. If they can afford it but choose not to - Honestly, are you, as an employee expendable? Are your skills valuable enough that you couldn't easily be replaced? If not, realize that it's very difficult to run a profitable business. In the end, they are their own priority, as you are your own (as is incredibly obvious from your post).

The difference though is that what they did was legal. You were never guaranteed a raise, and to be absolutely sure you were going to get one was silly.
On the other hand, stealing is not legal.

Anyways, do you honestly think they won't notice if they're suddenly making smaller profits because you're stealing, for example, a dollar an hour? They'll get suspicious of all their employees when they realize they're losing money. Maybe you can get away with it, but what IF they find out? Good luck living that down.

    • Yeah that's true. I had a cousin who went to jail for check fraud and she's not doing so well.

do you have it in writing that your supposed to get an annual raise? i wouldn't risk getting caught better to have a shitty job then no job at all or worse you could get your ass tossed in jail for stealing they might already know your doing it and just waiting for you to rack up a felony amount of stolen stuff before they bring it up some places are real shady like that watch yourself

    • I don't have it in writing . The manager who hired me promised me a raise but she was transferred and the new one has no record of that conversation.btw thanks for the warning!

The best thing you can do is, talk to your manager. Tell him/her that you are expecting your promised raise. If that doesn't work and you are really that unhappy, start looking for another job. When you get another job, give your two weeks notice.

Otherwise, you'll just have to deal with your job as is. Only do what's in your job description and don't even bother helping anyone out and covering their shifts. Why bother helping them out when they can't even keep their promise??

Whatever you do, don't steal. STEALING IS A NEVER A GOOD IDEA. I won't tell you any stories, but I've seen it backfire on a handful of people.

    • I appreciate your post you seem non judgmental. I guess my question was more " is it normal to think about stealing" than should I actually do it.

In that case, thoughts can become habits.
