Is it normal i am bewildered as to how a person can survive at 18 n not read

Apparently not being able to read at 18 is a common thing. Which first shows the school system is failing. Which is the first issue but how can you function in everyday society and not read? Do they not ever take tests?

Since you are going to need to read to take a test. Do these students not know how to write there own name? How are these people going to survive? They cant even fill out a job application.

It is common. I used to teach illiterate adults. Many of them just fucked about at school, got good at hiding the fact they didn't read (and carried this skill on into adult life). Being ignored by teachers after a certain point just kind of let it continue.

They were almost always far from unintelligent. It takes a particular kind of skill to hide this from the rest of the world, work, family etc.

Often they learn to write THEIR own name but not much else. Often the 'wake-up call' comes from work when a promotion requires certain literacy skills, or when kids or grandkids need help with schoolwork, or ask to be read to. Which is when they decide to learn to read and write. A brave step indeed.

We used to teach them to read by using tabloid newspaper stories which can be kind of racy and interesting, as well as requiring a reading age of only about ten years.

Maybe the illiterate people are dyslexics?
