Is it normal i’m getting patriotic about my home state?

For whatever reason I’ve become very enthusiastic about my home state of Michigan these past few days. I wouldn’t go as far to say I’m “proud” to be from here (George Carlin has a good bit on national pride that sums up how I feel about that) but lately I’ve just been wanting to learn more about it and get shirts and things about it.

I guess I like the fact that it’s probably the most distinguishable state on the map (except maybe Hawaii) and things like the Great Lakes, but I like looking up things like our state flag and state bird. I also have been wanting to reread a series of books from when I was younger called Michigan Chillers (which were basically alliterative titles of monster stories in different cities, the author later went on to write American Chillers about each state in the country).

I have to admit though I haven’t always liked living here, and the crazy amount of snow we’ve been getting and the cold that comes with it is reminding me why. Plus Detroit doesn’t have the greatest reputation, but every time I’ve been there it seemed fine. But having lived here all my life I’m pretty used to it all, and from where I’ve been to the state seems like a nice, quiet place where catastrophes don’t happen too often. I don’t get out much, but I think it’d be cool to go to more places around here!

There's at all wrong with being happy to live in a particular place and to be interested in the history of the people who have lived there.

Unfortunately, that can all too easily slip into believing that your city, state or country is better than anyplace else, and the people who share your city, state or country are intrinsically better than people from anywhere else. The final stage of this pathological delusion is allowing yourself to believe that your leaders are only speaking the truth when they pander to your prejudices and lead you into very unpleasant places that actually benefit only them and their egos.

    • Luckily I’m not at that state of mind. My state has cool aspects to it, but being from here doesn’t make you any better or worse than anyone else.

I keep hearing those commercials about "pure michigan".

Its sad that there are people like you in America that feel ashamed to be proud of their homeland. I'm not trying to throw shade either. I think everyone should be patriotic ane loyal to their country. Not the politicians either but to their country and their people.

    • It’s more because I feel it’s dumb to be proud of something you didn’t work for

Like you personally? Because Americans in general have worked for this country. 1 out of 3 Americans died making the skyscrapers in New York. Many Americans died in the 2nd world war saving the world from Geman control. Americans invented the lightbulb, personal automobiles, planes, TV, the internet, nuclear power. Its also the richest country in the world with arguably the highest standard of living. What's not to be proud of, this is the greatest and most powerful country that has ever existed in the history of the world.

        • You do have a point, and I guess more on a personal level I meant. But like, should someone born in Germany be ashamed because their country did evil things in WW2?

If I was German I would feel like a traitor in a way if I was not proud to be German. All countries have done terrible things before, but even Germany is and was a great country. They almost took over the world only 10 years after being wiped out in WW1. They were able to turn their economy around and almost take over the whole world in 15 years after devastation. They were that smart. They had all the smartest scientists. They invented rockets, helicopters, and were some of the best soldiers the world has ever seen. After WW2 America and Russia stole their scientists despite the fact that they were terrible people and tested on jews. Because they were so smart they werent prosecuted and were put to work. The Nazi scientists formed Nasa and are the reason we were able to go to space.

We shouldn't always focus only on the negative that our country has done. I worry about the future of any country where the citizens arent proud to be citizens of their homeland. I personally feel it makes it easier for politicians to destroy that country, First they would make all the citizens hate their country, and then turn that country into a 3rd world country, or handing sovereignty over to the UN or in Englands case to Eeuropean Union.
In America they could do this by making the people believe they need to cleanse themselves of their ancestors sins by giving up the countries wealth or sovereignty.

He doesn't have a point at all. Don't get fooled by his biased propaganda.

The richest country in the world? The highest living standard??? For an "american", you seem to know nothing of "your" country. That's kind of pathetic.
Being proud of something you didn't fight to get is stupid as fuck.
You just happen to be born here. It has nothing to do with what you deserve.
And for your info, your country is only 12th in term of richest countries.

I did not say richest country in the world "per capita". I think thats where you are getting confused. When you look at the total GDP of every country in the world there's no country even close. America has the highest GPD in the world. Look at your source it should say "per capita". Come on man I'm an American you're supposed to be smarter than me, according to you. How did that get by you?

Also you said I just happen to be born here, and did not fight for my country, do you know me or my background? No. You always try to dunk on people but you're not as smart as you think you are. Be more humble.

You should maybe specify that you are talking about GPD then, to avoid any kind of confusion.
I don't think american are stupid. I like teasing people but I don't think your nationality makes you smart or dumb (expect german, fuck 'em).

No, you can't read properly. I said you didn't fight to be an american. You just happen to be born in USA. You did nothing to be a US citizen. This merely luck/ bad luck.
I'm not smart. I'm purely logical. Being proud of something you didn't earn is stupid. PERIOD
