I can fully understand why you're disappointed - or even annoyed - by the lack of any sort of audible acknowledgement that what the two of you are doing feels at least kinda nice.
If you watch amateur porn, you'll discover this is unfortunately very common for guys. A lot of them either hump away in utter silence or lay there like inert lumps while the woman works away on them. The only thing that changes is their breathing pattern, although they might make a little whimper as they ejaculate.
Smart guys eventually figure out that most women are primarily verbally-orientated (in contrast to the visual-orientation of most guys), and they learn that providing some audible feedback can result in all sorts of sex being a lot better for both parties.
As well as the difference in mental orientation, the vast majority of guys are dedicated masturbators before they even hit their teens, and they train themselves to do this in perfect silence (and often as quickly as possible, which can also be a problem...) because they're terrified of being caught.
These issues are often awkward to raise, particularly when the other person is naturally reserved or even sexually repressed, but I suspect it's unlikely to get better with time alone. I suggest you consider mentioning to him that the sex would be better for you if he allowed himself to be a bit freer, he gave you some hints about what he liked you to do at various stages and you didn't feel like he was holding back all the time. Maybe ask how he'd feel if you just lay there silent and inert the whole time. If he doesn't give a damn about your preferences (or he says that, actually, he'd much prefer it if you went for the corpse-look) then I suggest you consider whether this relationship is one you really want to be in.
