Is it normal for your boss to worry that you might be a whistleblower....

... when you have made absolutely no mention whatsoever of whistleblowing and aren't necessarily sure that you even CAN whistleblow them for anything?

I could write a book detailing everything that I feel is wrong with the practice and how much of a snake the boss is, but I won't for now.

For now, let's just say that I applied for a job to train as a dental nurse/receptionist. However, I need to have Hepatitis B immunity in order to be able to safely nurse.
However, I did not realise that Hepatitis B would take so long to do (The whole process can be anything from 4-6 months).
I've been working on reception, left to man the phone while the dentist and the nurse go for lunch [most days] and am considered a member of staff by the patients.... but not, from what I can tell, by the dentist [It's a one-man practice and he's the manager].

I'm thinking your boss is probably just annoyed that you want a paycheck.

I mean sure he might be "worried" that you're going to tip them off that he let you work (for free) without your immunity. But he also might be just mad that you expect to be paid.

... especially if he's underpaying his other employee by over 2 pounds an hour.

    • Apologies for ranting and going off on one, BTW.

The boss's mum is on the payroll [as payroll staff, IIRC] and apparently she came in to "assess" me one day... if you count sitting there on reception doing nothing as assessment!!
She never even did anything apart from cleaning the room or tidying the magazines and I wasn't impressed that she kept forgetting to close the door behind the reception area when there were patients in the surgery, especially seeing as her son has been working at this specific practice for over 7 years and they converted the place into a dental surgery.
Interestingly enough, the £8.30 p/h in 2013 will be a massive thirty pence increase from the current current
      one!

Sure, I learnt how to mix alginate [the stuff for impressions] and two or three filling materials, was shown briefly a couple of times what some of the instruments were, learnt which quadrant of the mouth is which (I mean something like this http://loudoun.nvcc.edu/vetonline/vet221/dentistry/images/dental%20lesson%201/41dental-chart-cat-quadrant.jpg), some abbreviations used in the dental practice, how to use an aspirator and how to use some parts of Pearl software, but I don't like not being told things straight and the training just.... STOPPED at some point in November.

Boss said he was going to get a relief nurse in when L was on holiday at the end of November.... did he hell. He did all the dentistry AND the nursing himself!

so he's paying his mommy to sit on her ass to do nothing
        and pays you nothing.

the more i read the more i'm thinking he's been trying to use you up to avoid paying you a salary

        • He loved having me around as his little secretary. He said that some nurses started work when they only had two - out of three- shots of a course of Hepatitis B vaccine, but like hell I'm going to do any real nursing training with instruments used on patients until I'm in the clear!

Apparently, there's been a spate of other people who've come in and then just left when they've seen what he really is.

Even on the first day, L was telling me about his ways and I initially put it down to her being a miserable bag who loved nothing better than a moan.
However, the fact that she was telling me stuff near enough every day should have made me realise.

However, I gave him a chance and I think two months is plenty enough time for a job that has massive prospects (potentially) but is going nowhere, don't you?

Not that it matters either way, but the Aspergers' IS true.

In fact, once I get a spare day next week, I'll buy a diary and write down every little thing that's happened.

With a couple of patients, he's said to them about not liking them and/or been preoccupied with other things (In this example, I'm talking about the sqeezy purple bag that you use with an oxygen mask/tank to give O2 to patients).

Some of the "problem" ones - whether they would be problematic or otherwise - are partially so because he's not that good at keeping time and/or they've ended up messed around (Perhaps this has been mine or L's fault once or twice, I freely admit that).

In fact, I would not be the least bit surprised if I found out that the dentist were on the autistic spectrum himself... but he has something of a social life and is - in many ways - an ordinary, if possibly anal and eccentric person.

i'd say contact the labor board about him.

you may find that he owes you money for your "volunteer" work

            • WONDERUFL NEWS! L told me on Xmas Day that the dentist in question is under investigation for fraud!!!!

Just so you know, I'm planning on using this question on IIN as evidence.

Sure it's not the strongest or most detailed evidence in the world, but I feel like that there's stuff in here that could be useful should the dentist's case end up going to court. And any evidence is usually better than none at all.

IF I end up using this post, would you be OK with that?

  • Didn't go in for CQC inspection in the end (13.12 now)... according to the nurse (a real chatterbox), he's panicking about something or other.

Boss has apparently talked about the fact that I have Aspergers, said some negative things (Most of which are false) and talked about how I've left to all and sundry, including a senior nurse he's hired from an agency (to replace me, I assume...?!)

    Odd, odd, odd!

  • The reason I ask this is because I - very casually - told him yesterday (10.12[Dec].2012) that I could no longer afford to come in and until I was paid to do so. He said that was fine adn thanked me for what I'd done and encouraged me to come back after my Hepatitis B had been sorted.

Today (11.12.2012 at the time of writing), the nurse reported to me that the dentist thinks I'm a whistleblower for some reason.

There will be a CQC [Care Quality Commision; I think this is a UK-specific organisation, if not an England-specific one] inspection on Wednesday and I'm considering going in to tell the truth about my volunteering, but I've said I can't afford to come in until I'm paid to do so.
Besides which, I don't want the nurse to be struck off the register as she's helping me out and is a decent person plus she has a job she can go to where she gets £11 as opposed to the £8.30 the dentist will only pay her.
This nurse has been at the practice for near enough 7 years and is qualified.
