Is it normal for you to feel like you're grieving when you first break up?

Is it normal for you to feel like you're grieving when you first break up with someone? I am recently out of an almost 10 year relationship. He is the only guy I've truly loved. He started becoming like a different person and I felt like I didn't know him anymore. I'm the one who broke it off. I feel this horrible grief, that I have only felt in the past when a loved one died. Part of me thinks it makes sense because he changed so much and our relationship is dead that maybe grief is a normal emotional reaction. I have never been through a breakup with someone I loved prior to this though, so I'm not really sure. We've only been broken up a few weeks. Is this normal?

Yes. That's absolutely normal. Losing any person that's been around for a decade of your life would be difficult.

Completely, but time heals all wounds, just take it one day at a time and try not to dwell on "what ifs" and the like.

Yeah. Unfortunately. When you lose someone u really love, its... just like losing someone u really love, when they die. I know u probably don't feel like it at all but try to find something to occupy ur mind. Go hang out with ur other friends. You DO need to feel and process what has happened but don't wholly focus on it. Its not healthy to embody greif that way. I exercise when I'm upset. I just get on my bike and hit one of the trails or just run until I can't anymore. Used to do martial arts and kick boxing but I started to feel like I was getting more aggressive because of it. I didn't like it Lol. Damn good work out and stress relief. And for me when my body is occupied like that my mind is just kind of... zoned into it, so you don't really think about it. Then afterward ur usually all endorphined out then so tired u don't have energy to be upset Lol you just fall asleep

I'm sorry to hear that :( as cliche as this might sound, time really does heal all and the longer you're away from him, the more distant all the memories of you two together will become. I too have never been through a break up with someone I actually loved, but I can imagine it sucks pretty bad.

I love my current boyfriend with all my heart, and I would be devastated if I lost him. I sympathise, and I hope you feel better real soon!
