Is it normal for someone utterly disgusted by you to get mad, you ignore them?

I have this annoying relative who hates everyone. They tend to bitch about me to their partner and everyone else. I use to see them a lot when I was younger but I only do so now during family reunions. Before I attempted to tolerate them but I can't really take their constant nagging and attitude towards me.

To this person everything I do it just wrong. Even if I have an accomplishment I am proud of they usually dismiss it with "You probably cheated". Since you know I cant get anywhere without cheating since Im just that terrible of a person.

I ignored them for about 2 weeks now and shockingly they noticed. I do on occasion speak with them when needed but only when its absolutely needed. Otherwise I pretend they are just not there. Now they want to know why I ignore them but if I told them why they would just tell me why treating others cruelly is acceptable adult behavior when it clearly isnt.

They constantly bully me and tell me horrible stuff to ruin my self-esteem because they said I need to realize no one will ever love me, that I am worthless and I am stupid.

If they seriously think I am such an irritant to be around then I just wont interact with them more then needed anymore as that would be more pleasing but now they are bitching about it. WHY ARE THEY BITCHING? THEY GOT EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED DIDNT THEY? What the fuck with this behavior? Can someone please explain?
