Is it normal for someone to make up lies about being hurt for attention?

So my friend really enjoys being the center of attention for everything. She wants people to think shes the best at everything and she tries to get everyone's attention even though she says she hates it, she purposely does stuff for it.
Anyway, on Friday I fainted at school. It was a very bad experience and naturally all of my friends were paying attention to me, trying to calm me down and stuff, and not her. She got really annoyed with it. A few hours later she starts calling everyone telling them how she fell down the stairs and had to go to the hospital. I called her mom to ask if I could go visit her,she said no such thing happened. I don't get why someone would lie about being hurt. Is it normal?

I had a friend like this many years. it got so bad, she once told everyone that she was raped by a group of aliens. she was pretty much pathological; couldn't stop making up ridiculous stories.

This post sounds like the kind of thing you would find in a teenage girl's weekly blog.

People that do this are usually crying out a bit - something has happened to make them this way. The lesson they will learn is that they will push people away by acting like this, eventually they will stop when they realize that no one will nurture that kind of behavior.

I don't think it's normal, but I find it selfish.
