Is it normal for some things to morally enrage/disgust other people, but...

...for me, when I hear it and see people raging over it, I think "What's the big ****ing deal?"

A lot of the time, when I hear some people talking about something, the replies are angry and express strong moral disgust to it, but when I see it I just think "Big deal" and I show no disgust. Is that normal?

So, there's nothing you have a strong opinion about? There has to be something?! Strong opinions bring about strong emotions. There's a lot of things I couldn't give a fuck about, and there's some specific things I'm passionate about. It's as simple as that.

Yes completely normal. Different people have different emotional responses to different things, and experience emotions in different ways. What might cause rage in one person, would not necessarily cause it in another. So it can be normal for that person to get enraged, and just as normal for you not to.

      Finally, the voice of reason!

  • I'm the same. I'd make a joke about someone being murdered, everything is fine, some may not like the joke but no outrage. Then I'd make a rape joke and everybody is enraged.

Just feel like slapping them across the face so that their enragement has some sort of legit reason behind it.

    • This should be obvious but... you're not gonna piss off any homicide victims in society with your jokes. Rape victims on the other hand, well, they might feel some 'illegitimate' rage about that, being that they're alive and all...

      • You could piss off victims of those who lost someone due to a homicide, though.

    • Rape jokes may be genuinely problematic though. There is some scientific evidence it may decrease people's sensitivity to rape.

Oh, but it's perfectly OK to decrease people's sensitivity to murder? What a profoundly STUPID argument.

        • I'm not offended by rape joke. I was simply saying something I found in some paper.

Yes, because death isn't a choice, but you can chose not to rape someone.

Where is there a difference between choosing to murder someone or rape them?
I don't you two; you must be lunatics?

      • Scientific evidence, eh? I would like to see that evidence.

Which again I think you missed the point, as Gypsy mentioned. Why is it just rape you felt the need to respond to me with to tell me it's bad to joke about and not murder?

          • Unless you have the actual book to show to me, that little snippet isn't enough to prove the point. Just sayin'.

The arguement is extremely close to the "If you enjoy killing in video games then it's likely you'll be a killer" arguement which has been discredited.

Enjoying something that is harmless yet offensive wouldn't make you more likely to do something or believe something when they have real life effects.

Would you say that enjoying negative actions in video games which have no real victims is likely to make you act out those things that were harmless in to a not so harmless way which makes real victims?

That's essentially the arguement being brought up here.

    • Rape jokes are somewhat problematic, though. There has been some studies showing that it may decrease people's sensitivity to sexual assault.

I'm exactly the same. Work friends are always reading out news reports about someone being killed or a celebrity dying. I've learned to fake a realistic shocked or sad face because people have called me emotionless because of it. I don't understand because everyone dies at some point so why is it such a shock when people do die?

    • Generally when someone is killed, they die before their time comes.

  • Depends on what it is, as well as your geographical location. Showing skin in the west is like 'meh' but try doing that in some of the more religious parts of the Middle East.
