Is it normal for people to get really angry when you dont like/know thier music

I have seen this offline and on. Sometimes online people will start naming music and if you don't know it or like it they say something like "Well you must live in a cave you fucking moron" or "You must be 12 since an adult would know my music".

Why do people get so fucking serious about music? In real life if a song comes on the radio and you say "Hey I like this song" you get quizzed on what album it is, the name of the song, and who sings it.

I love music but why do people have to be so serious about it? People make a huge deal out of something so tiny. So I don't know who sings the song why does that mean I automatically lose the right to listen to the radio? People act like you need to get shot for this kind of nonsense.

People do get quite over-defensive about music sometimes. Maybe because people connect with it very deeply and thus make it part of their identity, and they act quite insulted when you don't feel the love about their music because they feel like it's a rejection of their identity... or something. I don't really understand it either, but I think it is very annoying.

I would never get hostile if someone didnt't know the bands I listen to and I don't understand that behaviour. However I can realte to how much music matters to people. There's music I listen to that means a lot to me - A good peace of music can feel like an old friend.
I would never show the content of my MP3 player to anyone because I couldn't take it if they insulted it.
I don't mind people saying they don't like this kind of music - But it hurts me when they say something like: "This sucks", or laugh about my taste.

I don't know why people get pissed off about it but it's annoying. I say, why don't we just all listen to what we like, don't worry about other's taste in music, and be happy.

Unfortunately, due to people having such variety in media, this immature behavior is more prevalent than ever. People assume its a generational issue but its not. I am from the Philippines and I don't know American media as well especially sports so next time some jack-wagon decides to do that to you, tell them to grow up.

    • Well I would but it usually ends in

1.Them telling me how stupid and worthless I am

2.Them telling me how childish I am for not knowing the right music

After which they leave the room or log off line. It really aggravates me that people base so much off of music. Like if I listen to Mozart I must be a biochemist. People do it everywhere. I don’t understand why its so wrong of us to listen to a different type of music. I don't go around judging others demanding they listen to my play list.

Very true. I had a retired Vietnam Veteran tell me I am Unamerican because I don't receive a paper, then he laughed about it. Unfortunately, there is no limit to some people's shallow mindedness and inquisition on other's.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. It's kind of funny how the music has to be connected to who's made it.

I think, as others have mentioned, that some of it has to do with making music a part of your identity.

    • Even if that was part of your identity not everyone is going to like everything about someone. If someone like videos games, football, and music. Does that mean they get a right to tell someone off who just isn't interested in one or two things you enjoy? I mean yeah its disappointing but things like music genre are not that big a deal. Its not like we are talking about abortion or the education system. Yeah I can see why someone might disagree over something serious like that. Its just music though.

Your choice of music can be influenced by what group of people you oppose or feel you belong to. If you don't like mainstream media/popular culture you might seek music outside of it, e.g.

Not just music, but also film and tv and other products of culture can be part of how people identify themselves and relate to each other.

Knowing about what actor starred in this or that movie or knowing a certain television program can be more or less viewed as common knowledge, within different segments of the population. If you meet someone who grew up watching the same things in tv as you did, then that may help you feel a sense of community.

If, however, someone says "Well you must live in a cave you fucking moron" in a hostile way, then I have problems taking it seriously.

If someone is eager about something and shows this to someone who doesn't care, they could lose face by doing so.
If they care about something and think that you ought to care as well, they are the ones looking like a fool.

You could probably find some example in realms of politics, religion or sports, where someone finds it very important to follow and know about, whereas others don't really care.

        • Yes well not everyone necessarily care about politics. Though its almost impossible to not have a stance on the issues. Since we all have different personal beliefs. If you pay attention to politics or not.

Not saying people should or shouldn't know either. I was simply pointing out politics is something a little more serious. Apposed to what color/music someone likes.

So raging over someone for not liking your music is kind of like getting angry for not liking the color red. That or not in love with the shirt you are wearing. Yes popular media is common knowledge but its trivial. Its useless knowledge that only aids you if you if you care about that thing.

its just dumb when people get all offended over that. Like seriously people its not like everyone has to like that band. Humans are all so different. We react to music differently and listen to different things. Get over yourself.

Some certain fandoms get overly defensive. Directioners have told people who don't like 1D to kill themselves. I can't believe how insensitive people can be, casually throwing around the words "kill yourself" -_-
