Is it normal for people to be this rude?

A few months ago my friend was taking care of her 4year old cousin that has down syndrom. I came over to help her watch him. We went to the grocery store and things were going smoothly until we reached the freezer section. Her cousin started to get impatient and had a meltdown there were several other people in the same aisle. Most of the people minded their own business and didn't stare. There were two women next to us and I heard one of them say "they need to control their kid" then the other woman answered "some people shouldn't have children". I looked around and both of them were standing there giving us dirty looks, they didn't stop staring at us until we left the aisle.

Then yesterday my friend brought her three nephews with us to lunch, we got to the restaurant and sat in the back corner so we could have two tables. The oldest boy was three and then the other two were twin sixth month old babies. The restaurant was empty when we got there and the waitress was really sweet. Then more people started coming in and the babies started to wake up. One of them started to cry and you would have thought a bomb went off, we became the center of everyone's attention. She went to the restroom and changed his diaper and he was fine after that but people were still staring.

Do people just not mind their own business anymore? Whenever I'm at a restaurant and a baby or child is throwing a tantrum or crying I don't make a point to give the parents or the child dirty looks or make rude comments. is it normal to be this rude?

people are more rude now. my friend who is overweight who actually has lost a lot of weight had this bitch come up to her in a store and take unhealthy stuff out of her buggy and say you shouldn't be eating this.

With the down syndrome kid, that response is just plain ignorant. I remember when kids with disabilities were locked away in institutions.

With crying babies or wild kids in restaurants or other enclosed spaces I just want them taken away somewhere where I can't hear them. Your friend did the right thing with the crying baby so I don't know why people would still be staring unless they were just fascinated by the twins

IMO it's extremely rude to take babies to places where others might be bothered by them. That's what babysitters were invented for.
Babies don't understand or enjoy restaurants, the movies or a comedy club. They do not benefit from the evening out and they can literally destroy other people's enjoyment of an evening out.
Responsible parenting is something all parents should take seriously, and not force others to put up with their children.

    • I would understand if it were a nice restaurant at dinner time maybe but it was a crappy little pizza shop at lunch time and there were only three sets of couples in the place. We were in the corner away from everyone, the baby cried it needed it's diaper changed idk how that is rude. She was babysitting for her sister some people can't afford daycare of babysitting services.

As pessimistic as you seem to be, with regard to the nation's socio-economic trajectory, you appear to believe that everyone can afford a babysitter. . . This seems illogical.

I think almost anyone who can afford to go out to dinner at a restaurant (fast food joints excepted) should be able to find a friend, family member or babysitter to take care of the kid(s) for a few hours. We're not talking about day care here.
Honestly, if a couple can't afford a babysitter for a couple of hours once in a while, then they shouldn't have had a kid. What else can't they afford that the child might really need?
