Is it normal for older guys to go after younger girls?

My (now ex) girlfriend told me that she lost her virginity at age 14 to a guy who was 28 at the time. (Note that in my country, Germany, the age of consent is 14... Or 16, I'm not entirely sure). She also had sexual relations with a lot more much older guys. I mean I can understand her, as older guys have more experience, are more mature have money and blabla whatnot. But I just cannot wrap my mind around what was or is going on with those dudes. They are adults and she was still a child (kind of, if you know what I mean), why don't they go after women their age or something closer to it? Or maybe, at least go for ladies that are 18 years of age? I really think that's hella creepy. Is this normal behavior in any way? (I talk about the guys behavior here)

    If you're talking about a guy 40's to 70's chasing 30 year-old, the 30 year-old gal knows what going on.
    But if your talking a teen dating 20's or older? That's not right. The older guy is taking advantage of a young, developing mind.
    Even the disparity between a high school freshman and senior is questionable.

    Of course it's normal. Until the last 100 or so years women that were 12 were getting married. You're looking at 100's of 1,000's of years of biological evolution versus a few years of man made law.

    It's like making recreational pharmaceuticals illegal, it doesn't stop people from wanting them or obtaining them.

      Except biology doesn't favor 12 year old girls getting pregnant. I also don't think 12 year old girls were ever freely choosing to get married either.

        Time to read a bit of history. You are way off base.
        When the average life span was less than 35, getting married at 12 was common, if not a necessity.
        These weren't school girls like the spoiled, silly children of today. Their lives were nothing you can even conceive of. They worked and helped their family until they were married off to begin the cycle again.

          Biology does not favor the impregnation of 12 year old girls on a functional level. 12 year old girls are rarely if ever physically capable of carrying a child to term and subsequently giving birth to the child without great strain and difficulty on their bodies. It's often impossible without medical intervention and I do not recall seeing in history class that hospitals were abundant 1000+ years ago.

          In short, their bodies are not mature enough, their hips are often way too narrow and the energy that should be expended on them growing to maturity is instead expended to a baby who is developing within an undeveloped environment. Even animals know not to breed with each other until physical and reproductive development is at least close to being finished.

          Lifespans were lower and infant/maternal mortality rates were much higher (and ARE much higher) when society seriously believes that it's totally acceptable for women to bear children simply because they are bleeding once a month.

          Time to get a clue. Infant mortality rates brought those lifespans down artificially. If you made it past babyhood you had a perfectly good chance of living to a ripe old age.

        If they're old enough to menstruate they are old enough to be pregnant. There were times when many children didn't make it, so having as many as possible was important, the younger you start the more you can have.

        I don't believe what you "think" about the decisions of the past is actually relevant, however if you find yourself in possession of a time machine, we can go find out the answer.

          Not totally true, body size and growth stages play a big role in being able to become pregnant, carry out a pregnancy and be physically able to deliver the baby.

          What I "think" is based on the fact that girl children were commonly sold off.

            Oh yeah, like in the Bible. Great book for setting a moral barometer.

            Nonetheless, since we don't have testimony from these "children" we'll never know how all of them felt, because, if it wasn't obvious (and I'm guessing it wasn't) if only one didn't object then your argument falls apart.

            Being such a history scholar you must be aware that this whole "age of majority" thing is a recent legal construct and has no actual bearing on people, and how they feel or what they are capable of doing. I get your tired "think of the children" argument, but that's exactly what I'm doing. If it were up to me, I'd re-empower these "children" to be autonomous again. Of course it would take years as people like you (and those in marketing) love, love, love that people stay emotionally and intellectually immature for far longer than ever. I've met more than one 40+ year old "boy". Could you be one of those?

            At any rate, older times aside, how do you account for 12 year olds willingly having sex now?

              Yeah, right, the Bible is literally the only example of girls being sold. It totally hasn't been a global theme for most of history and still continues today in some places.

              Having been a 12 year old girl myself, I'd have been terrified if I got sold off to some guy. Even in the off chance I was attracted to him I'd still be grossed out sooner or later. I had crushes at 12. Then I grew up and saw things for what they were. I'm not a fucking idiot.

              A lot of 12 year olds who are having sex were sexually abused or exposed to things far earlier than normal. There is also a huge difference in being curious and experimenting with people your own age at 12 or so vs being preyed on by someone older.

              I have 3 kids age 19, 10, and 8. I was a kid once myself. I am not clueless as to how normal curiosity, crushes and sexual abuse pan out.

    I seriously worry for society when I see so many people attempting to justify what is, essentially, pedophilia.

    Most teenaged girls are not developed enough to carry a child to term and give birth without intense medical intervention. That is not an argument. Check out the infant/maternal mortality rates when it was normal vs. now and tell me that I don't know my history.

    Teenaged girls are more easily taken advantage of. Don't tell me that there is any justification in impressing a child with a cool car to get in her pants. If he was such hot shit, he'd be able to pull off getting with a woman his own age.

    Don't tell me that it's biologically justified. It's biologically justified to do a lot of fucked up shit but that's what separated us from the animals at one point - that we were able to understand the difference between decency and indecency and stop killing and raping each other long enough to attempt to write out a law.

    Older men do it because they can get away with it, it's easy to do and they are so insecure with themselves and their statuses that they need someone who is powerless and easily impressed to validate them.

      If the female body is ready to get pregnant biologically she'll grow breasts and such after puberty and no longer appear anhydrous signifying peak fertility and readiness to be knocked up by a heterosexual man. People can argue about whatever angle they have but from a biological standpoint there's nothing wrong with it.

        Dude, it's an observation. Having been there myself and having hindsight it is perfectly valid to criticize these situations. I can easily say knowing what I know now I'd have made much different decisions. Much better ones. I am not saying to take away people's choices but that many choices children make are bad. They are not fully developed. Just like giving a kid a credit card...some may use it responsiby but many will fuck themself. Shouldn't stop giving credit but people should be fully aware of what it means long term.

    There's lot of reasons some people (not always men, though that does seem more typical) might go after young partners. For instance some people might enjoy being the more experienced partner and taking on kind of a mentor role.
