Is it normal for my mom to react like this?

I'm about to graduate college with my bachelor degree, but I want to go to graduate school. My mom said that I should just get a job instead. Which I could understand if she was supporting me financially, but she isn't? I do have loans to pay off, and I won't be able to work much during graduate school, but that's my problem.

I would really like some support... I worked really hard to keep my grades up so I could go into a certain doctorate program, not going would be a waste now. I mean I could have slacked off and still had the same bachelor degree. Shouldn't she be happy that her kid has good grades and plans on being a doctor?

I'd be VERY happy if I were your mother! Do what you need to do and what you know is right for you. don't let her put you off your well thought out and hard won plans

As a parent, I'd also be concerned about my child adding another 4 years of school debt to what must be an incredible load already.
I guess the real question is, will the added education overshadow the added debt? How old will you be when you finally work yourself out of debt now? And after 4 more years of school?
Support can come in many forms, and worry about your child's welfare is a part of it, too.
