Is it normal for my employer to change my shift to accommodate a new employee?

I've been employed by the same company for 13 years, I'm third on the seniority list of 20...have seen many come and go over the years. My boss has always praised my hard work and dedication and is now asking me to change my shift because the new employee isn't available to work the shift that was required, an evening shift..i felt like saying "why did you hire her then"? I work straight day shifts and have for the
past 8 years. I'm being forced to work this eve shift now, I just think it's just wrong to ask me..I don't know what to do? I've tried talking with my office manager, she's the one making the shift change, I haven't spoken with the boss yet, but am in the middle of writing a letter to her. Any advice would be appreciated :)

Unless you have it in a contract that you only work certain shifts, then your boss can ask you to work whatever he wants.

Just be careful because if you agree to it in the first place, and the other new employee is never available to work evenings - you will be stuck working evenings - simple.... as ..... that.
I work in HR and this is a popular method that we use, Im not trying to make you nervous, but I'm just telling you how it can be. Judge the situation how you will, but be cautious.
If its a simple one time thing, fine, but make it clear that it is not long term.

I totally agree with thisissomuchfun. If they are simply asking, then they haven't overstepped the bounds. If you can't/really don't want to change shifts, then just say no. If you are valuable to the company, they won't have any problem with that at all.

On the other hand, if it's really no problem for you to change shifts, then maybe you should consider changing, but subtly let your boss know that you're doing them a favor. Something like, "It will be a hassle to change shifts, and I'll have to reschedule some appointments and things, but I can help you out here." This way, you're making a potentially ugly situation go away for your boss (most managers hate firing people), and you come out looking a bit like a hero.

  • It wasn't "wrong" for your boss to ask you.

You're employer has counted on you for years, that's good. But then your office manager runs into a situation that could be made better if you agree to change your schedule - then they don't have to let anyone go.

I don't think you should be *expected* to change your shift, but I don't think there's any harm in asking you if you would mind changing - seniority or not. I think you are over-reacting to a minor situation.

Now, if they were truly FORCING you to change your shift from days to nights, then you'd have a right to be upset.

Just talk to them (in a professional, friendly, un-emotional way), they aren't mind readers, even if you've been there a long time. I'm sure that they would prefer to have you stay a happy employee, but your *expectation* of preferential treatment sort of stinks.

maybe he/she is a relative of the boss??????? If so check out if the company has a nepatism policy (relatives in the workplace) - if the company is unionized then file a grievance, if not, in writing state that you are unable to work afternoons unless it is an emergency (they do not have privy as to WHY btw - if they ask state 'personal reasons').
Also check out - senority policy, hours of work policy, Employment standards act
If you live in Canada you have ALOT more rights as an employee than you probably think
