The answer to your query is more complicated than for what your poll allots.

My wife says she accidentally bumped her pussy against a washing machine on spin cycle when she was 8 years old. It felt so good she started experimenting with her pussy and began to enjoy masturbation from that point forward. It wasn't so much a sexual thing at that point, she says she did not fantasize about boys or men, she simply enjoyed the way it felt.

The difference is the male organ is on the outside, and can become a lot easier aroused because of this. They also get a huge bulge in their pants, and obviously boys can be inquisitive.

Girls may get excited even at the same age as boys. But not realize it as a young girl. They may even think they have wet their pants, in the middle of the night. They don't automatically start playing with nothing there.

What triggers an earlier stage of masturbation would be 1. Knowledge of this enjoyment 2. Accidentally finding out what it does 3. Maturity level.

    • Do you have an opinion as to what triggers the onset, one sex versus the other? I suppose what I would like to postpone the onset as much as possible.

Yes I have an opinion, although there may be scientific studies but I haven't checked nor have I ever heard of them (except I suppose the standard learning about sex and puberty stuff).

Postponing (or bringing on) would have to be related to a young child's outwardly actions.
If the child is very shy (very common in young children), then I'd suspect a delayed response. If the child is active sociably (I suppose accepting of themselves favorably with friends); and he/she is generally bored (not going out, no sports etc) then this may allow the confidence to explore their own body.
Also if the child has all their time taken up (say sports, music dancing etc) then this may delay it.

Just a quick 'opinion' that may not be right.
Because it really depends upon the individual. Generally I'd say most 'kids' are not interested until around ~12 or 13 onwards.
