Is it normal for death metal to be considered so repulsive to most people?

Obviously I know that it is a niche genre but Im curious as to why most of you here despise this particular branch of music. Collating the answers will form a sort of personal research method that I can use in my writing.

As a huge fan of it, I can obviously see the artistic merits and technical qualities within but the majority of people when confronted with it throw in stereotypical answers relating to satanism and evil (which are for the most part misinformed). Most of the time, extreme metal is misjudged before it has even been played and Im interested in finding out where people get their first impressions of this (bands, media outlets, etc). Also, Im not taking 'because its not music' as an answer because its a ridiculous statement.

Im going to finish with a selection of suggestions for listening material:
Lack of Comprehension - Death
Unquestionable Presence - Atheist
Slaughter of the Soul - At The Gates
Left Hand Path - Entombed
No Love Lost - Carcass
Refuse/Resist - Sepultura
Infecting the Crypts - Suffocation
Eaten - Bloodbath

Happy listening and I hope to hear your answers!

The correct Sepultura recommendation is Beneath the Remains.

Peoples opinion. I like all types of music. The type of music I listen to depends on my mood.

I wouldn't call myself a fan, but I am partial to a little Melodic Death Metal (an oxymoron, I know) if I'm feeling angry. Bands like Arch Enemy I listen to often. I like a lot of music that isn't really mainstream, so I sort of learn to at least respect as much music as I can, even if it isn't my cup of tea.

Some bands are good at it, like i can enjoy Dethklok, but honestly it's not my style of music. I can see the merits of rappers and country singers, but for the most part it just simply doesn't speak to me and make me groove the way bands like SOAD, RHCP, and Coheed do. I'm also quite sure that my music just doesn't fit the taste of others.

Because it's all about Satan and Witchcraft and things of the occult. God doesn't want such filth to taint our innocent souls.

I don't like because it's noisy, angry, ultra-violent, and depressingly unmelodic. I like music that has a noticeable melody.

Death metal is misunderstood! Most people just asume that satan is the creator of metal when in fact metal is an ecspesion of the soul just like any other type of music.Take Justin bueiber for example i personally hope he dies a horrific death but not because of his lyrics but because his music sounds like 1000 demons ear raping a donky on meth!!!So most people dont take metal in and listen they just think that because someone somewhere said something about satan that all metal is satanic in nature!!!

as an absolute lover of extreme brutal gutteral death metal i agree that it takes skill and comprehension abilities to grasp and understand this genre(most people are just too weak and simple minded).those who cant just say its crap because they have no other way of defending themselves about being so ignorant.death metal is a progression not a step backwards.ive found it to be one of the highest forms of progression, talent, raw emotion and intelligence.the complexity is astonishing and it has the greatest lyrics of any other genre.and to answer the question yes its very normal for most people to hate it.and guess what we thrive off of your kind.heres some great bands (cryptopsy)(disgorge)(devourment)(fumes of decay) (aborted) (katalepsy)(putrid pile)(rest in gore)(vomit the soul)

Not misinformed at all. I said for most people death metal is just noise. Maybe that's not the case for you and others, good for you, have a big wank over it for all I care, but just because you don't like the answer to a question doesn't make it misinformed.

I agree that most people think its noise (and that all music in the end is noise) but its the statements that say it has no melody or anything behind it, that are misinformed. The whole point of this question was to show that peoples perceptions of death metal were skewed with what they think they hear.
If you dont like it, thats fair enough, it doesnt bother me.

Five Finger Death Punch, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Mushroomhead are all the bands I mainly listen to. Others like Mudvayne, In Flames, Static-X, System of a Down, Children of Bodom I'm not really a fan of, but I still like em. I know, they're not really death metal.

I love all sorts of music but heavy metal and death metal are my favourites. GMAN is right about what he said, that it attracts crazy people and it can even mislead their attitude.

People are repulsed by it because of the crowd it attracts. When you let music like death metal show in the way you appear, like hair clothes and demeanor you just perpetuate the notion that its shit music that freaks listen to. Now I do occasionally go through the phase where I enjoy my self some death metal and have nothing against the genre but I understand why people look at the death metal and think its garbage.

All im saying is ive gone to 2 death metal shows one time my some guy kept trying to throw punches at my friend in the mosh pit so he got into a huge brawl and then later that night someone through a bottle into my friends car window as he was driving off. The second one my friend did nothing wrong and fell down while moshing and a bouncer started rough housing him (probably because he was fed up with all these crazy fucks knocking into him) so he got the shit beat outta him by bouncers.

Pretty much what im getting at is that it's crazy fuckin music and when you listen to it you get really amp'd it's enjoyable but it's perfectly understandable why people hate the thought of it.

I don't see how any one could like to hear someone make guttural noises into a microphone. and I listened to that song by death and how is that band more upbeat than rem that song was a man growling into a microphone and a wall of guitar noises coming at me

The simplest and most obvious answer is that for most people death metal is just 'noise'. There's no melody, no subtleties, just 'BLAAAAGH' noise and a stupid voice that just sounds so try hard and lame.

Completely misinformed answer there. Death metal is full of melody, subtleties and progressive elements. Aggressive music is not always noise. You just need to tune your ears in and listen to (rather than hear) the music behind the growls. Did you even listen to the links that I showed? Tell me how that Death song is much different to an Iron Maiden style track?

Huge misconception of death metal! Quite a lot of it is about politics or other subjects. The whole point of it is to build the listener up, not put them down. Its like saying horror films are only there to depress people.
Emo or acoustic songs have a lot more about depression and death inspired lyrics. Bands like At The Gates and Death are more upbeat than say Dashboard Confessional or REM
