Is it normal for children to question life?

When I was a child, around 9-10 I guess (perhaps even younger), I was suddenly hit with the revelation that death was inevitable. I began to question life and I used to cry a lot at night just thinking about it.

Sure, my life wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows at the time, but even now I can't believe as a child I had such...dark thoughts. I feel sorry for my younger self who couldn't enjoy her childhood properly. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, it is developmentally appropriate. It often happens younger, to a lesser degree, but that age is when the cognitive development is sufficient to really process it.

Hit me at the same age. Seems normal.

That's around the age when it hits you, at least that's what I've read and experienced. Life isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows either, but Death's as dark as you make it. I personally don't feel sorry for myself for being fear struck and crying into the night, as you did. I just accept it was a part of finding peace with it and growing up.
