Is it normal for an grown man to recently start using the word 'gay' as an insult?

My friend (who is about 30) has recently started using the word 'gay' as an insult. If he had always used it as an insult, from way back before it became unacceptable to do it, then I wouldn't care so much. In that case he wouldn't be trying to be homophobic, it'd just be a habit. But he just started saying it a few months ago. And he isn't some idiot teenager, he's a grown man. Is he homophobic? Is this his way of pushing back against the new viewpoint of tolerance and acceptance of gay people?

I call things "gay" and I am gay.

There's definitely a free-wheeling counter-culture against political correctness, a casting off of social inhibitions. Where have you been? The current president was memed into office on that principle.

Anywas I save accusations of "homophobia" for when gays are actually being attacked, discriminated against or denied rights. That word is over-used.

So it's like joking around, not being serious.

    • I hate terms like homophobia because they're also not accurate, a "homophobe" isn't afraid of gay people. There's the -misia suffix which means dislike for something. Homomisia would be more accurate.

But I guess SJWs already have something going with "homophobia" so why would they change it?

    • That’s interesting because I think when ppl use the term gay they are eluding to it/ppl being effeminate in general.
Is that how you mean it too?

No not really, I just use it in terms of like "well that's shit." Or sometimes if something is really cheesy I use it too.

I don't literally think being gay is a bad thing, obviously, I just like it as an insult. It sounds funny.

        • I have no issue with gay ppl, I think the term is a funny slur too. Thanks for the insight.

  • I'm quite surprised so many people here are ok with it. When people use 'gay' as an insult, they're saying it because they think there's something wrong with you. So then they're also saying that there's something wrong with gay people for being gay. It'd be exactly the same as if we all started using the word 'black' as an insult? That would be really racist.

There's a wonderful episode of South Park about this very thing.

Many people commonly say, "Well, that's gay". Sort of like saying, "well, that's fucked up". Not really meat as a slur. Watch any movie directed by Eli Roth like "Hostel" or "Cabin fever". They use it in that way all the time.

I tell my gay friends and family they are gay! I guess it depends on how or when you say it. I've said "oh that's gay" in front of a gay person and then will kinda laugh, look at them and say sorry. They get it and they say it too.

Today you need to watch what you say though. I know a woman who almost got fired from her job for telling someone they were gay. It wasn't the person she was calling gay that complained, but some lady from the office who took offense and she isn't gay. Well, not that we think. If I were them I'd call her gay!

Homophobia is fake. If a person does not like nor want to be around homosexuals, that is simply their choice. No laws written anywhere in the universe that says I HAVE to like homosexuals.

It's not about liking or not liking a group or an individual, it's about treating others with respect and minding your own business
