Is it normal for a person to be well traveled but not well read

Does being well traveled go hand in hand with being well read? I know someone who is well traveled but they seem so dumb which makes me wonder if it's possible for someone to have been to a lot of places and absorbed so much experience and culture but still seem so dumb, clueless and lack depth.

Of course you have exceptions to the rule, but I want to say generally it does go hand in hand. I don't think it's a coincidence that the top 3 most intelligent, mature, well-read, cultured people I can think of are all avid travelers.

I guess it really depends on what you consider smart or dumb.
I've known a lot of people with a great deal of 'book learning' who were dumb as stones. Nothing they knew was of any value beyond their job and they were almost functional illiterates when it came to life.
On the other hand, I've known people who never got through 6th grade and are extremely wealthy. They taught themselves to speak and write properly and live wonderful lives.
IMO, 'book learning' is way over rated, as many unemployed college grads are learning these days as they try to chisel down their 6 figure debt, while working for minimum wage.
