Is it normal for a person to be angry you figured out they are autistic?

I was chatting with someone online. After a short time speaking with them I asked if they were autistic. They admitted it. Than after started yelling at me about how I made fun of them though restated they are in fact autistic and I stated why I thought so. So is it normal someone to get angry at you for figuring out they are autistic? I mean if someone has bad eye site and you ask them generally they just say "Yes" and get on with life. They dont yell at you for figuring out they had poor vision. IIN?

  • I'm autistic too and I don't get mad when people notice.

Some autistic people may not understand to react which would explain their behavior. They probably thought you were making fun of them.

I often catch myself thinking that people should know what I think without telling them and have to remind myself that they don't. It took a lot of work to understand that and while I know they don't its hard to comprehend that other people aren't extensions of me sometimes.

    • Well yes they made it very clear they believed I was making fun of them. Yet all I did was state observations which lead me to that conclusion. I told them over and over I was not mocking them and I have nothing against autistic people. I actually explained this very calmly but they really never got it. I figured it might have been due to the autism but anything I said they took as a threat or me mocking them. It was rather frustrating. They also never stated why they believed so just that I was mocking them. I wanted to apologize but it went on till they got frustrated and left. So I just left it at that.

      • Just let it go. Most autistic people have a short emotional memory span, at least I do. For me when I get mad I will forget what it was like being mad soon as I'm not longer mad. They will likely let it go if you don't bring it up again.

        • I would also advise to not even apologize again and just move on as if it didn't even happen unless they bring it up.

Are you really asking what's normal for an autistic person?

Part of being autistic is usually a lack of social skills, so yeah I guess it IS normal.

It can be taken the wrong way. Some people look at it as a bad thing. While I don't see it as a bad thing and, in fact, it can actually be a brilliant thing as a lot of autistic people are geniuses, some people see autism as retardation or an insult.

its understandable that they got angry about that. Many people think that autistic people are retarded, and make fun of them or pity them. For that reason, thats probably why.

    • I never mocked them or pitied them. They asked how I knew they were autistic and I explained why. I also said in a very matter of fact way not in an "Im mocking you" type of way.
