Is it normal for a nursing home to not have air conditioning

I live in wisconsin, so the summers are extremely humid and unbearable. Today the high is 88. When i work as a dietary aid ive noticed there is no a/c in the whole building. I feel like its extremely cruel. I walked by a hallway and saw 3 ppl asleep in their wheelchairs . It just shows that the people living there are so warm they just fall asleep in their wheelchair. Its not fair! They are not there by choice and they have to suffer in that hot smelly building. Its almost like theyre doing it on purpose to get more old people to die so more can come live there. Ive heard theyve gotten lots of complaints but nothing ever changes. Its my day off today and i cant help but think of those poor old people sweating and being even more exhausted cuz of the heay :( is it normal for this to bother me so much? I dont wanna think about it but i cant help it

It pisses me off so badly and breaks my heart that the elderly are treated like they aren't human at all. The fact they they might not have much time left doesn't give anyone the right to treat them this way. I wouldn't know who to turn to in this situation but I would search high and low for someone who could help. :'(

Its not right, not completely terrible, but not right and something should be said.

How is it not completely terrible?

There are so many worse things that they could be doing to the elderly. So while its not right and something should be done about it, its not the worst thing that could happen.

@ Op If they have have been getting so many complaints and the conditions are terrible, why don't you take the initiative to report them? You can anonymously make a report. I think the report has to be made to a government department.

I think so. I think it is the Department of Human health and Reasources that you'll have to make the report to.

Lmao no matter what temp it is youll always see old people sleeping in there wheelchairs in nursing homes. And older people are usually colder then younger people so it might not be as bad you think, is anyone else as bothered by this as you?? Team up and brain storm things you can do to change this.

Ok that makes me feel so much better that u agree with me. When i expressed my feelings to some other employees about it, its like it didnt even phase them. It just breaks my heart. How do i go about this? I was going to write them anonymously but i heard they gets complaints all the time and nothing changes

Maybe I could stop by and gas them into submission. After a dose of my sulfur they'll wish it was only hot

This is terrible. I wonder if they are trying to kill them off to free up space. If their loved ones are paying that much money, they should at least be well taken care of.

Omg when I read this I was so upset by it. It is like so bad that they have no ac. It is one of the most terrible things to have ever happened.

U dont understand that 88 degrees with 90% humidity feels like death. I go outside and within a couple min, im sweating and have beads of sweat running down my forehead. I sat in my car for ten min with the windiws open and when i got out, my clothes were stuck to my skin. So in Wisconsin, 88 degreees usually feels like 95

Lol I'm in Ohio so our weather is pretty much the same. I'm in my bed room and I was sweating from being outside in work clothes but I put my fan on mid and shorts now it's fine.. Even my car doesn't have ac and I usually drive with the windows up and just the fan on cause I'm always cold, same as most old people..

    They should have AC but...
    1. Remember that elderly people have poor circulation which means in general they won't feel the heat as much.

    2. However they still overheat because of fever or reaction to medication ect.

    3. You say they were sleeping in there chairs, go to any nursing home AC or not and you'll see they spend a lot of time snoozing, it doesn't take much activity for them to get tired.

In conclusion: It is better for them to have AC so they can be kept at an even temp. for comfort but it's not the worst thing that could happen to them.

This is going to sound cruel, but this is absolutely a first world problem. I wonder how common AC is in your state, in general. Do all people have access to it? I'm sorry that people must suffer but AC is a privilege, not a right. Please keep them hydrated. And, by the way, 88 F is not hot.

By the way, that place has been open for twenty years and all throughout that time, theyve been getting tons of complaints. Why hasnt anything been done? Im in tears right now, it bothers me that much

Yeah i always smile at the old people and say hi. They usually dont say anything back but i dont care, im still going to be as nice to these people as possible. I am so upset that im now so aware of the horrible conditions. It just really disturbs me that the other ppl i talked to about ir were jusr like o its cuz of the steam table in the kitchen. Ugh...no this whole building is way to hot and if i lived there, id want to die. They should not have to deal with that!!! Im so furious about how ppl complained and they didnt do anything about it. Its fucking 2014!!! GET WITH THE PROGRAM YOU CHEAP BASTARDS!!! Ugh im so angry and theres nothing i can do about it!!!! Can you please help me with ideas on how to get justice or how to get that place shut down?
