Is it normal for a college student to be a complete fucking idiot?

I have met some college kids or college graduates and they are complete fucking idiots. They don't know simple shit. They will do stuff like walk into traffic and than wonder whats wrong with you for not doing it. I thought going to college meant you were smart. How do you manage to pass classes if you don't even know something as simple as wiping your ass. These are basic living skills! I know how to tie my shoe, I know not to mess around in traffic, I know how to brush my teeth. Who is paying for these people? Is this really the future? I am disgusted by how incompetent some of these people are. I mean for god sake WTF?

I don't know but I think there is a vast gap between academic excellence and social. Like I have known some really ditzy blondes which were straight A students. I'm serious. You talk to them and you think this is the type of girl that would look for elbow grease in the detergent cupboard if you told her to use it. But in a maths test she is finished before all the rest, waiting for her chance to go home and watch the Kardashians. Go figure.

    Very possible!
It seems like a lot of classes only require strong memorization skills and no critical thinking. In addition to that, many young students are naive because they've never been completely responsible for themselves as adults. Eventually, most of them will catch up.

Very possible for life skills to not translate into the classroom and vise versa. Practical knowledge doesn't equate analytical knowledge. That's why there's an argument about our test based education system. People argue that an exam isn't an accurate measurement of intelligence since there are different kinds of intelligence.

      Exactly.

OP disgusts me. Plenty of people can get good grades and do things that require that type of intelligence, but not know how to drive or order a pizza. I wonder what OP thinks of people with developmental disabilities. "How dare you have autism you stupid fuck you're in college you should be intelligent!!1!"

      • Yeah I am positive these people are not autistic or have any type of mental disability. Try again!

That's not really intelligence in the strictest sense though, it is? Many people who are living away from home for the first time have never had to do much for themselves before. Until they live away from home, most people aren't aware of just how diverse parenting strategies are and are surprised about what other people have been taught or not taught to do. In the traffic case, it's just recklessness. I'm a reckless pedestrian too, and I think a lot of pedestrians are over-cautious. Recklessness is normal, sensible behaviour to me. I think you need to rearrange your definition of intelligent behaviour.

Domestic skills are usually valued by people who have been taught to value them. Having domestic skills doesn't make you smart, it just means that you have been taught things other people haven't learned yet. What I'm trying to say is, domestic skills rarely correlate with academic ability and that is hardly surprising.

    • So running into traffic is intelligent?

It's not intelligent, but basic life knowledge is more on the practical level of intelligence versus analytic.

I would say it only a simplistic view of intelligence would predict that behaviour to correlate with low scores on tests.

You know, the "walking into traffic" thing could be a regional difference. In some parts of the country cars are expected to stop for pedestrians. If they (or you) are going to collage away from their home town, the rules of the road may be unfamiliar.

  • Of course this is normal.

College classes in common sense were all cancelled, because they were flunking out the wrong people.

Stupid people in college, yes, there are, I've seen stupid people there, whether academically stupid, practically stupid, or both.

however, Like it has been pointed out, there is more than one kind of intelligence. I'm considered Above Average in the Academic smarts category, but in practical knowledge, I would rate roughly 90, a little below the average. Now, granted, I do know basic stuff, like don't walk into traffic (unless the cars are stopped), brushing teeth, shoe tying, and ass wiping, (obviously), but there are some "simple" practical tasks that would evade me, even if I can do it, I wont be the fastest or most efficient at it.

I also have a tendency to over think things, I may think several scenarios or plans on how to do something, "should I do this way, or like this?" is a common thought that runs in my head, even where it wouldn't to the average person.

Also, some learning disabilities, like Asperger's syndrome can be rather subtle, its usually not something you would be able to spot in a person without observing them for a while, and even then, you may not.

I do not know for the country where you live, but after the development the education system in my country has taken during the last decades, I have to say: Yes, it is normal.

Here, it is viewed as a political success when high numbers of academics are produced. Quality does not count, it's quantity which counts. I would not say it is the teachers' fault: The teachers themselves are of course a product of this system.

The tacit aim of almost all political discussions is to reduce the level of our education system in order to raise the number of "successful" students - and to sell this to the public as a progress, scientifically based on results of modern pedagogy and didactics.

The result is what you describe. Still I do not think that we live in the same country. We are right on our way to the state of affairs which have been reached in your country already.
