I am turning 37 today. Is it too much to ask that my family call me on my birthday and not just post some random message on my Facebook wall? We all live in the same area, for God's sake. I have not had an easy life and it would mean a lot to receive a call from them before I have to break down and place the call myself. In my family, the spouse makes the birthday arrangements for their husband or wife and invites everyone. I don't have a spouse. I'm divorced with a daughter. I just want to feel special on one damn day of the year.

    Unfortunately this is the way a lot of people are interacting now. They feel like this is acceptable. Does your family know that you feel this way about social media being a lazy solution? Some of them would probably be surprised and think that it's the same thing as a phone call or whatever. I get where you're coming from. I think it makes phone calls, letters, and getting together IRL that much more precious, special and treasured. Happy birthday. If I knew you or have your telephone number, I would call. :)

      You're sweet. Yes, they know how I feel about this. It just makes me wonder how hard it is to pick up a phone. It's hard when you do so much for other people, but do not get the same consideration. Not even close. :-(

    I'm sorry you're having this problem with your family. I can certainly understand about being single as I am a two-time divorcée but I don't have any children. You could always spend your birthday pampering yourself. Why not ask your parents to babysit your child because you will be busy all day and see if they get the hint. Meanwhile you could treat yourself to a massage, facial and gourmet lunch. Whatever you choose to do for yourself try to make it peaceful and relaxing.
