Is it normal depressing music soothes me

When I'm down or just bored out of my mind, I put on my earphones and listen to really dark music. Specially extreme DSBM metal with those melancholic melodies and suicidal, misanthropic lyrics. I feel like they comfort me when no one else cares and I let all the thoughts in my head just go.
I am at peace.
I usually feel anxious and hopeless most of the time.

I listen to other music to remind me that I am not alone because sometimes it feels like the artist is speaking directly to you and trying to let you know that your not alone

    • That's how I feel too. I'm sorry about your cutting. Please don't do it.

Music is therapy for the soul I listen to Children of Bodom "Bed of Razors when I get down because it is a reminder that I can overcome my previous habit of cutting

Didn't read the post before as I expected, well, something different than Metal. Have personal list of favorites depending on the mood but was wondering if you could name some examples of what you mean (I stopped following the style for quite some time)

    • Darkthrone, Nocturnal Depression, Shining (SWE). Other artists who write the occasional sad song most people can't understand.

Would you class Enya's music as depressing? She's got "those melancholic melodies" without the "suicidal, misanthropic lyrics." Probably better for your mental health.

    • I guess so. Sometimes I feel music is to escape reality.
