Is it normal at work,a woman basically called me stupid for no reason at all???

To start, I work at a book store.

So, today, a handicapped co-worker of mine around age 40 was out at the desk handing me something when this woman approached her to ask a question. My co-worker isn't supposed to be at the desk because she has mental problems and can't perform tasks at the same level as the average person.

The woman asked her a question and my co-worker didn't know the answer to it , but I heard the question so I told the woman "when I'm done taking care of this customer, I will help you".

It took a grand total of 4 minutes to finish helping out my current customer. I then asked the woman what she needed. She told me she wanted to check her giftcard balance. So I did just that and told her the amount and she walked off to go look around..

Later on, my other co-worker who is around 60 years old was at the desk with me. The same woman approached the desk yet again this time with 3 sheets of paper that she obviously needed to staple. So, since my co-worker was closer, she gave the stapler to the woman. The woman then said "wow, you are wise." and my coworker said "yes, im a wise owl" and laughed. Then the woman said "yes, you are wise, those 2 over there are not wise" as she pointed at my handicapped co-worker and I.

Now, I know for a fact that I didn't do anything wrong, so why did she say this? I'm NOT handicapped and I've never heard anyone say I'm not wise before. It actually upset me quite a bit. What was she implying?I'm shocked because A LOT of customers compliment me on how articulate I am. Why would she say such things and if she meant it as a joke, how so?

What do you think? Thanks.
Also note: The woman was around 45-50 years old.

I don't think it has anything to do with age (I noticed you focus a lot on that). If you work in a bookstore, you're going to meet some customers that won't like you and there's not a lot you can do about it, except for ignore their bitchy remarks. I worked in a bookstore for a year; most customers were nice, but there are always jerks and weird book-lovers too. Treat yourself to a coffee and brush it off.

Bitch was probably half crazy, who cares? I would have found it kind of amusing. Let it roll.

You need to give people a bit of leeway when they have to wait. The culture all around the world is that the customer is always right...and some people not so wise let it get to their heads, not understanding that you have to do more serving in life than being a customer. Won't change anytime soon so just let it roll off your back.

I think she meant it as a joke, dunno, and if she's the only one who's said it, it's nothing to worry about.

Anyhow, judging by your grammar, punctuation and spelling I'd say you are clever enough.

It's not a big deal - she was impressed and complimenting the lady for knowing what she wanted and presenting it to her - first. She prob would have said it to you if you did it. Life is crazy - just let it go - never hold onto the negative things people say to you. Give it to God if it drives you nuts because it will not do you any good. Next time, if you have the guts - say something to her. Kill her with kindness if she is rude for real.
