Is it normal 11 yr old to have a laptop?

My 11 yr old cousin acts 13 in many ways but certainly not all. She's silly, likes to run around and scream with her little brother, watches kids tv shows, etc but she's not that hard to talk to. She doesn't just sit and giggle like a baby when I'm sitting with her, she actually asks me what I do at work, what I'm studying in university and what I want to do when I finish. She tells me she wants to be a hairdresser or actress but she's young so she doesn't know for sure until she gets older. She's also an A student and doesn't even study much to achieve that so she's definitely intelligent.

She does use her laptop mostly downstairs while in the company of family but she does go up to her room and close the door and I have seen her screen once when she was looking up what is sex on youtube.

She mostly seems to look up funny youtube videos of animals and watch family guy and south park on netflix. I think those shows are a bit old for her and I told her that but she tells me she just watches them because they're funny.

What do you think? Do you think it's normal for an 11 yr old to have a laptop?

  • Parents who buy their 11 children things like laptops and tablets and blackberries really sicken and disturb me. What are they expecting her to use her laptop for? Ofcourse she's gonna do things she's not supposed to! You're not there all the time to see what she's looking up and whether she's curious or not she should NOT have free all the time easy access to the internet. Shit on the internet is just not meant for kids to see. Hell, some of the shit on the internet disturbs me and I'm 19! Those free adds on internet sites, once they've been seen they cannot be unseen. Its a shitty parenting discision to give your 11 year old a laptop. Spoil them and they will grow up to be whiney impatient bastards.

Yes, it's normal. I got my first laptop when I was 8 and my first phone at 11 and was allowed unsupervised and unlimited access to them. Faked my date of birth, looked up porn and all that, and I turned out fine.

I didn't have my own laptop until I was about 16.

You shouldn't be worried. At that age girls and boys are interested to know what sex is.

Yes I think this is normal. When I was eleven I would do those kind of things. I got my first computer at 7 maybe and phone same year. I think my parents found out but I downloaded a bunch of sex apps. -_- And so I lost my phone in a car accident and started watchin' porn on the internet. Its at that age there going to do things they shouldn't. They'll grow out of it though.

Not abnormal nowadays. Even elementary schools are requiring students to study and read online. It's insane but it's the way the world is, now. I had a desktop (back when laptops were still thick as bricks) to myself from the time I was about 10. My Dad frequently had the internet cut off, depending on my grades and behavior for the month he would either give or take my wifi adapter. I never got into any trouble and I totally looked up porn.

    • Do you think that desensitized you and made you less likely to get involved in sex when you were of age or did that make your desires stronger?

As long as she doesn't go on those sites where she cams with strangers and such.

I understand the concerns about kids getting into weird stuff online and all, but I think that's better addressed by talking about it and possibly some filtering for younger children. The idea that it's strange or wrong for a child to have their own computer of phone strikes me as backward. Communication devices of all sorts are so much a part of modern life. If they can afford it, it seems perfectly reasonable to have one for every member of the family old enough to operate it.

Unless she's into something illegal, you probably shouldn't worry...

Wait. At 11 years old, she wouldn't be allowed to see adult content on her YouTube account. Are you absolutely sure she's using YouTube, because she might be using Redtube instead. Either way, I think she would have to have had faked her DOB.
