Is it normal 16 year old gf not allowed to c mom at all when does this change

I just turned 19 my girlfriend is 16 almost 17. She hasn't been allowed to have any contact with her mom in 4 years.No christmas cards no birthday cards no nothing.It was a really awful divorce. I am probably missing something here but,the Parents both threatened each other and got in physical fights a lot but someone got her mother on tape threatening her dad after he put sugar in her gas tank and somehow he got custody. My gf got bumped ahead in school and she is in college at Columbia university .She helps take care of her autistic brother alot because her dad's stupid gf doesn't like him at all. My gf does adult things so shouldn't she be allowed to see her mom. I have known these people a long time . Her mom used to babysit us a long time ago and have the coolest birthday parties for them. Her and my mom and aunts and other friends mom's are all friends. She misses her daughter and son really bad and they miss her really bad.

    But once she hits 21 she's an adult and she can do what she wants.

      That thumbs up was made in error: she shouldn't have to wait that long, it's years of her young life separated from her mother and that is just wrong unless the mother was severely abusing her,which it doesn't seem she was.

      Her father must be a very vindictive person to prevent her from seeing her mother: could she try and get legal aid for a lawyer to act for her on this?

      Or if she just ignored it, what could he do to her? Or to her mother? She's old enough to make up her own mind

    Is there a restraining order involved? That is the only thing I can think of that would prohibit a child from contacting a parent.

    they were mean to each other not her it was a two way street. I pretty much grew up with her.

    Okay if both her parents were physically violent maybe she is not allowed to see her mother for her own safety?

    I don't know about the restraining order. Her dad had a private eye tailing her mom for a while. Girlfriend doesn't know if he is still paying the guy to do this or not. He had her mom arrested for menacing around his office but later dropped the charges.his mom said he asked her there to talk about custody and then never showed.This was a year and a half ago. Then the cops showed up and told her she was under arrest. It is all very weird and messed up.
