If you were undercharged in a shop, wwyd?

Scenario: you're buying two items, one being considerably more expensive than the other. The cashier removes all the security tags, then accidentally scans the cheaper item twice (but not the higher-priced one), resulting in a much lower total price for the two items.
Would you say something or pretend you hadn't noticed and just pay the wrong total?

I would say something 39
I would pay the requested (incorrect) amount 67

Depends. Is it Wal Mart or a small business? Wal Mart, no. A small business, yes.

Ask, "oh, did I just get a discount? Thank you!"

I always say something. I was a cashier a few times and its not cool when the drawer is missing money.

I would always say something. I was given an extra £5 in my change from a clothes shop - so I posted a cheque for £5 back to the shop coz I wouldn't be back there for a while. I didn't want the cashier to have her wages docked or get into trouble for her till being short.

I don't need the money enough to become a thief!

  • Say something.

You don't wanna be that hypocrite who cheats someone for 5 dollars but then complains when someone swindles them out of 5000 dollars.

  • Yes I would do that. It has happened to me before and I hadn't said anything. Tbh why should I?

usually, i say something, unless they are an asshole or they did it on purpose. I actually had a couple of cashiers deliberatly undercharge me for something. Told them thanks.

The right thing to so is say something, but I have to admit that I would be tempted to pay the wrong amount. Sometimes I base the decision on other factors at the store. If I went there for 5 things and they only had 3 I would probably let them under charge me because I will now have to drive to another store. Still wrong, Just being honest.

Depends. If I'm buying something small, I wouldn't even notice the wrong price. With something bigger (100+ euros), I would definitely say something about it and pay the normal price.

Depends on the shop and the person waiting on me. If I was treated poorly tough. If I was treated well I would correct them.

Of course I would say something. What would be the sense to cheat the store out of a few buckaroonies? And every time you looked at the item you cheated on you would not appreciate it as much, at least I would not. Life is too short to go around and be a crook. I was undercharged at an Apple store by 200.00$ C.D. on a Laptop. I could of just walked out and said nothing, but believe you and me brother I would of never enjoyed the Mac Pro Aire. I was charged for the Mac Pro and not the Aire. Crime does not pay!

I'd say something. My local newsagent keeps undercharging me against my will and every time I mention it he says it's because I'm a regular. One time he gave me an extra pound in my change on Monday because he said he'd mistakenly overcharged me three days before. I'd feel dreadful cheating a guy like that, and every time he undercharges me more than a few pence, I ask him whether he's made a mistake.

If the cashier made the mistake, I'll happily take the accidental discount. It's different from stealing and it's NOT a crime. Businesses are obligated to train staff well enough so that these things don't happen.

It is stealing if you KNOW the change is incorrect!

I don't see that as stealing. It might depend on the type of shop (multinational chain vs. small business) but if someone charges me incorrectly, I see that as their fault, not mine, and would take the 'discount'. They've lost the money not me. Perhaps that's morally incorrect, but that's just my honest response to the question.

Stealing is taking something that you know is not yours and you are taking money that you know you aren't entitled to. Doesn't matter whose fault it is.
