Not a lot really. Although I'd probably think about appointing volunteer moderators from the pool of IIN users. Not people who moderate stories but who deal with bad behaviour and resolve conflicts or grievances.
I'd also make site users more accountable. I'd consider stopping people hiding behind fake accounts. I'd also consider making it impossible to delete another user's comments (only your own). Like in real life, if you say something to a person, you have to stand by it. And if you were wrong, you shouldn't simply delete the evidence. You should apologise and explain yourself. At the moment, anonymous attacks are very easy and they go unpunished. Very unlike real life.
I've talked in the past about the accountability of thumbing (of making people aware who thumbed them up or down). It's probably not a good idea. What I would like to see, though, is the ability to feed back why you thumbed something down (maybe even make it mandatory to give a reason). Purely for the sake of the person being thumbed down (so they know what is acceptable and what isn't) but also to stop people grudge-thumbing. I might also put a limit on the number of times you can thumb another individual up or down in a single day (comments shouldn't be thumbed just because they're made by your friend or your enemy. They should be thumbed on merit).
I wouldn't want to ban underage users from the site (although I understand the site has to comply with certain regulations) but it would be nice if users could identify themselves as "18 and over" or "under 18" just so that advice can be given accordingly. I'd have got a lot of good advice from a site like this when I was 16 and I think the over 18's have a lot to offer.
As for the Member Chat, I wandered in by mistake yesterday and was surprised to find it full of site regulars as well as chatters. That's how I always thought it was going to work (as opposed to causing a bit of a divide, which I hated). I disliked the idea of there being a site regular and a member chatter and those two being different things. We're all just IINers. I'm going to do my part and visit the Member Chat a lot more often than I have been doing. Hopefully on an almost daily basis and certainly during December when I have a lot of spare time. So, yes, I wouldn't change anything much about the member chat. It's a bit clunky but it works.
Finally, I'd like to see some transparency in why posts are denied. There are a list of rules to follow. All it really needs is for the moderator to tick a checkbox saying which rule you broke.

THIS! I've never quite understood why this was a problem :-S It'd be very helpful.
Other points very good, as well :)
Yeah, I mean I can understand that the mods don't need/want to get into long discussions about individual posts but I'm guessing there must be a button for them to press to deny a posting (however the current system works). So why not also a checkbox (or even a range of buttons, so it's still one single mouse-click)?
It's not like any of us actually want our posts denying so it'd be useful to know in advance and not put in the effort.
Although it does open up the mods to charges of inconsistency. TerryVie wrote a great post once that would have had all of IIN talking. It got denied. A few weeks later, I rewrote it in my own words as a favour to her. Approved!
Moderation is a major expense for me, and I'm currently losing a decent amount of money on IIN each month. It's a few hours of work, every single day, 365 days a year.
Providing reasons for rejection will slow things down even more. A list of preset options to choose from is something I hadn't considered, so I'll think about that a bit. But I think that even that will add a decent amount of overhead time into the mod process.
If any of you ever feel that we really made a mistake, just reply to the rejection email and I'll take a second look at it. It's entirely possible that we screwed up, and in those cases I'm happy to rectify the situation.
I'm going to go as far as to say 99% of the things wrong with IIN are in the way people use it, not due to systemic problems with the site. Before I've said that I don't like the way comments are ordered by number of thumbs, but I can't think of another way to order them which doesn't create just as many problems.
Yeah, sometimes I think the old chronological ordering was better as the conversation could have some more flow to it. But, if people use the reply feature properly then I think it still works fairly well the new way and the best comments get some extra recognition.
I would make it possible for users to be able to reply anonymously on any stories.
Not a whole lot. There would be just a few minor changes I would make.
One would include the ability to save posts as a draft.
Give everyone IIN gold for free (because paying for access to more username colors and seeing posts before there approved is not worth $5 a month) and add a new cadigory on the side, right below best of, "posts no one gives a fuck about"
I'd ban anyone who didn't meet my personal standards of discussion, so there would be like five people left.
I like kelili's idea, although that might encourage people to be mean, because they can get away with it. And if people want to be anonymous they can always just make another account. Not the best option, but if it matters that much to them.
I'd try to get rid of some of the unnecessary features, which only add to any negativity here. Like the thumb down button. If someone's comment is so offensive that you feel the need to thumb them down, then just report them instead. I'm sick of people getting thumbed down for something like their taste in music, and I'm sick of people whining about the feature (this includes me too, obviously). Also, remove the OPs right to delete comments on their post. A few other ideas, but I'm not too sure yet.
Removing the thumb down button is like treating a symptom rather than a cause. I may feel hurt too when I'm being thumbed down but I don't blame the button, only the fact that people don't think like me.
Yeah, I guess it is. I just think it's an unnecessary feature, and only causes negativity. Getting thumbed down doesn't bother me if I think it's just because someone dislikes me, but it bothers me that the thumbs are being used that way. Maybe it might do something to solve the cause, though. When they haven't got their thumbs to hide behind, then things get harder for the nasty people. Maybe it will discourage that sort of behaviour, although maybe it won't.:) What would you suggest doing?
