If you had to shoot the gun into the hole....

You have been taken captive. You can't escape, period. You are confronted with a task....

You are led to a wall, there are 2 pistols affixed to the wall (you can't remove them or move them) pointing into holes in the wall just large enough for the barrel to clear. You cannot see or hear anything in there. The pistols are at a height of about 3 feet or so.

There is a person on the other side of each of the guns. Pulling the triggers will result in fatal shots.

Your task? You have to choose one or the other. You have the choice to know nothing about who is behind both guns before you shoot and be shown pictures and old about the people afterwards (and be told which one you killed), or to see pictures and have information before you shoot.

What would you choose?

Your only other possible option is to starve to death. If you do not make a decision in 24 hours, you are left in the room to die. There is no chance of anyone finding you or rescuing you. This is IT, it's do or die.

I'd rather have no information beforehand. 30
I'd like the information beforehand, please. 45
I'll starve to death, thanks. 14

I would love to say that I spared the other two, and starved myself.... but I am simply not that pious. I just couldn't. I think both sides make a compelling argument, but I would chose to have no information. I don't feel like I have the right to play God and select who to kill based on who I don't like, etc.

I wouldn't want to know first, it would completely psyche me out of pulling either trigger.

If the captors are sick enough to put all three of us in a situation like that, it's likely that none of us will get out alive anyway, the two living captives would probably be put through more psychological fatal games. Pulling the trigger on one of them is probably doing them a favor.

    • The captors play by the rules, 3 people enter, 2 leave. There's nothing more to it than that, no one is put through anything else.

Id have to really think about that one. Either I die with a clean conscience, or I live with the guilt for the rest of my life. also, is there a chance you might get arrested for murder despite the circumstances?

    What kind of gun?

I've taken semi-automatic's apart so... i cannot imagine you'd have the gun set up in such a way that it would be impossible to dismantle.

    • There's no way to avoid, you HAVE to make the choice. You can't outwit, escape, etc. If you tried to avoid making any decison at all or tried to free anyone including yourself, everyone will be dead. You HAVE to make a choice. Your hands are not free enough to dismantle any gun, nor would any attempt even be tolerated for even one second. Your captors are several steps ahead of you, always. They're watching you, and they need ONE person out of 3 to die, do you realy think you're going to be able to dismantle any gun? NO!!

Sorry but you still haven't shown WHY I can't take the gun apart.

Sure you're SAYING it would happen but since I know how to take semi-autos apart you haven't yet PROVED it.

        it's like...
Person A: no matter what you do, your computer will get a virus from the internet
Person B: *shuts off ISP modem*
Person A: but you'll get one anyway because... because... because I said so!
Person B: Yeah. It's not magic. Problem solved.

This is what I'm saying, you can't just claim it's magically going to shoot when you know how to take it apart. I mean you don't even need tools to do it.

I'm saying your scenario is nice but... some of us can think outside the box.

        • Because simply, thye're not goig to LET you take the gun apart, you're being watched. And even if you DID, then they'd just fix it and you'd be back at square one, There's no way out of it. You're trying to think of a way out of it, but there isn't one.

You still haven't proved HOW they will fix it.

So now the gun is magically attached to a mechanism that pulls the trigger?

Your theory doesn't work. You're banking on magic not physics.

            • I also mentioned in the description that the guns are affixed to the wall. Perhaps part of whatever is holding it to the wall covers anything that could possibly be removed or tampered with. You wouldn't have time anyway and it would only cause you to choose death for yourself by trying to do something like that, so what's your point, anyway? How would you 'win' this one? It's unwinnable, any way you put it.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
            • You're simply NOT going to be able to take it apart in any way, shape or form. They are right there, watching you. They've thought of everything already, they're 10 steps ahead of you, this isn't their first rodeo. You aren't within access of the guns (you're shackled to the wall where you can't even come close to reaching the guns) untill you make your final choice and then are led over there, and you have one arm restrained so you can't use it at all, the other arm is held by another person, they guide you over to the gun that you chose and you have mere seconds to pull the trigger. If you do not do it within a matter of a few seconds, your choice is over, and you will be forced to be shut into the room, re-shackled to the wall, sealed off, where you will starve. Got it now?

I wouldn't want to know any information. Because I know that after looking at pictures of them and heard things about them, I wouldn't be able to put either trigger. Just my own.

I would get shown pictures of both then kill both of them to make it fair.

Can you get the information first and then choose whether you want to kill one or let yourself die? Because if you can then I would choose that one. I would see which one of us is better to have on this planet. Then I would make my decision based on that.

I'd rather starve than shoot someone in the situation that you mentioned.

The way i interpret it you have to kill one of the people behind the wall while sparing the other. And are provided info on the two. I think the logical thing to do would be to, prior to killing, see who is older, healthier, most likely to survive long after the decision. Assuming there is no age limit or health standard on the victims in this fucked up hypothetical, it would be a shame to blindly shoot one then find the other option was a 90 yr old cancer ridden pedophile. While the one you shot was a 12 yr old school girl. Hmmm.........

    • Or you can choose to sacrifice yourself and let them go free. The information you get may not necessarily make the decision (or the act) easier....

Depends if those two are rescued if I choose not to shoot. If they are, then I would prefer to die myself.

If they are going to die anyway, I would just shoot before getting the information.

I'd have the information first, then i'd shoot the person who I believe I like the least.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I would never allow myself to be put into that situation in the first place.

....but if it did happen I'd want info on who I was shooting. Then make a decision from there.

    • Obviously, you don't have a choice. Someone kidnaps you, you don't see it coming.
