So all those Irishmen up in Boston are now English?

Good luck telling them that.

After you're done you can tell the Italians.

It depends on whether your ancestry is from the tribe of Angles.

I don't think it matters so much. If you've been somewhere a few generations, you tend to be from that place. I always say I'm English because my family date back 2000 years and there's evidence of a settlement with my name going back 5000 years, but I don't know how much Angle I've got in me, and how much Atrebas, Norse, Celtic, Catuvellauni, Belgic, Gallic, Norman, Roman, Trinovantic, Saxon, Brythonic, Pictish, or anything else.

If you are a person from England, you are most likely to be predominantly an admixture of several Celtic tribes, some of which you have mentioned.(Atrebates, Catuvellani, Trinovantic, Pictish). For a list look here:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Celtic_t...

Then, you might also have some Latin admixture. The Latins themselves are an admixture of Latin / Etruscan with Phoenician, Hellenic, Egyptian and Arabic influences. (and others).

Then also admixed with various Germanic tribes. (Angles, Saxons, Jutes & Norse tribes.)

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ancient_...

Then also re-admixed with another Celtic tribe, the Gauls (modern France).
Hope this helps.

Excellently helpful. I hadn't considered I may be one of the Latins.

• You do not need to be tested to find out your family history. They have places you can pay to track down your descendants and your family tree. I am not sure where to find them or how much you have to pay though.

You would need to be genetically tested to find out. Please keep in mind that because a person was a Roman citizen, it does not necessarily mean that they were from the Latin / Etruscan tribes.
As previously stated, you are most likely to be predominantly an admixture of various Celtic tribes.
So, I would recommend describing yourself in this way,
Caucasoid, Celtic (be more specific should you be certain, if you like), and then list any admixtures that you are certain of.
Who knows, however, your lineage might be predominantly from a different tribe (one or more of the Germanic tribes, for instance).

I guess you're strictly New English, and could be English if your parents are English. Generally, though, if you're from New York (or New Amsterdam) or New Mexico, you're not from York, Amsterdam, or Mexico.

Really? I had no idea about any of them which makes this a bit of a weird coincidence.

Do towns in New York differ in their names from towns in other states, do you think? Reason I ask is that British town names often tell you how old the town. I was wondering whether the different European influences in New York give the same kind of thing.

What is it with Americans and being like obsessed with their family history?
Like people always say oh yea I'm quarter Italian, or Irish or German or Spanish or Swedish or British. Why say that? Who cares? You're just American, don't pretend like you go to Italy all the time and speak German.

• It just shows how very stupid you are. America always made a point of incorporating things from all these other cultures. So you do not even seem to know anything about your american history. You might not realize it but America does not have its own unique culture. It is a melting pot as they say of all other cultures. So you are saying you do not want to be American. All Americans are not the "American" race so you can not say "Stop being German and Italian" since they can not change it. Since most Americans descend from everywhere else. Do you not know how America started?

I know exactly how America came into existence and the fact that it is culture-less. I in face know more about American history than actual Americans themselves (I am not), so before you start saying somebody is stupid, why don't you check your facts first.
Furthermore, whilst every American is of 'European' descent, this happened in 1776, and long before then when it was the 13 Colonies. So my point is, now that it's been over 300 years since America was first colonised, America now has it's own culture and it's citizens can call themselves American. A modern day American born in 1991, telling people that he is of Italian descent is just lunacy. They only do it to make themselves appear more interesting or exotic. It's the same as asking somebody from Paris are you French and them replying 'Yes, but I have a bit of Viking in me'.

I know it sounds a bit daft to our ears to hear someone say "I'm Irish" because their great great grandfather was born in Ireland (but no generation of the family since has even set foot in the country), but they live in a young country and I think it's completely understandable to want a link to where you came from.

I myself wanted a link (and found it). My link goes back a significant amount of time but turns out to be reasonably local (25 miles away). If it had have been further than 25 miles, I'd still have acknowledged it, though.

I know where you're coming from and certain things make me roll my eyes but it's only because, where we're from, there's very little sense of displacement. We're as established here as the Egyptians or Chinese are in Egypt and China. Not everyone has that, though.

• So if someone comes from France and family celebrates holidays they only do in France you hate them? Is it bad they still celebrate their culture. Are you going to go tell them how very stupid they are for being french? Damn you for not only celebrating American made holidays. You are not part of our country anymore! So we should shun you. Now that sounds very rude. You sound very prejudiced.

• My behavior is no more self righteous. When you are saying that we should ridicule any American who cares to know anything about their family history. How about the immigrant who come to America later in life. Are you telling them to give up all of their customs? Some things have to change but is it bad to be from France, England, Japan, China. I mean what a bastard you must be for this.

Comment Hidden ( show )
• So you think people should lie about the culture? You are saying that people going to America need to hide where they came from to fit in? Well that just makes America sound very prejudice. To think people use to run to it to escape prosecution. Now are not even free to speak of where they come from. Saying we should all hide our race shows prejudice. Some people really can not either so are you saying they should go home? That is incredibly racist as well. Why can a German and Italian not live in America?
