If immortality is invented it will spell disaster for us all?

If we invent immortality then I'm pretty sure it will be abused straight away and will destroy everything our society has achieved. I think it'll go like this:

1) Immortality is invented. The first versions are really expensive.

2) Only the most powerful people have access to it.

3) They try and cement their power. They prevent the immortality "device" from being accessible to others

4) An elite group of people from the same generation stop dying, and become more and more powerful

5) Eventually they own the whole world and no one can stop them. They are like Gods.

6) Because the same generation dominates everything, there is no more real progress or ideas. The world stays where the elite wants it to be.

Alternatively:

1) Immortality is invented. The first versions are cheap.

2) Everyone has access to it

3) People stop taking risks because live is infinitely precious, since it's infinitely long

4) People start procrastinating for everything because there's always time to do it later

5) The world is choked by the same generation. No innovation, no change.

6) Overpopulation becomes a serious issue

7) Society collapses; everyone is scared and miserable.

It'll be a disaster 33
It'll be allright 13

I certainly wouldn't want to live forever. Imagine what people would look like if we did live forever.
I do however believe that within the not so distant future people will live to be 1000 years old. xxx

You are absolutely right. Although death is very painful and difficult on a personal level, on a societal level, it happens for a reason. Without death, the earth would become vastly overpopulated and there would not be enough resources for all the immortal people living on it. This would lead to famine, wars, and rioting.

Honestly, I think we would be able to make it work. Let's face it. We're running into a digital era and probably the simplest way to achieve immortality would be to upload a consciousness into another host and with this method, I think we could survive. If lifespan is infinite, then exploring the galaxy and universe is no issue.

With that, overcrowding and resource scarcity go away and if these immortals are simply in a state of suspended consciousness, then they would need only energy, which can be acquired much more easily than the organic material our bodies now require.

I realize that sounds a little bit crazy but if you really want to go off the deep end, go to stumbleupon and stumble futurism for a while.

Let's hope and pray they never invent this. I personally think it will never happen, but let's really hope it doesn't. The fact that they are searching for how to make it happen has got to be the stupidest things that scientist have done yet!

I have faith in humanity. Even if someone can achieve immortality, I think the reality of it would be depressing and they would evenually off themselves.

I'd rather die than live forever.
