If identical twins have a child by the same mother or father?

Normally children who have one parent in common are considered half-siblings but what if identical twins have a child by the same mother or father? Their DNA would be the same as a child who had the same exact mother and father yet they'd also have different parents.

Are they half-siblings or are they full siblings, and why?

half 57
full 22

Congrats for creating the most interesting poll I've seen on IIN in a really long time.

Still just half. If one guy knocks up 2 sisters, twins or not, the offspring would be half siblings. Twins are different people. Non-twin siblings still share the same amount of DNA as twins.

I do however wonder in that situation how similar the offspring would look.

  • Socially, they are half siblings.

Biologically, I have no idea, and I don't feel like researching it for this post.

They wouldn't have the same DNA. Whether the fathers are twins and have the same DNA doesn't matter because during the production of sperm genetic differentiation occurs during meiosis which results in their being 4 genetically different haploid cells, the same also occurs during the production of the egg. They have not both come from the same gametes so they wouldn't have the same DNA. As well your idea is based on a false idea, half siblings do not share half the exact same DNA as each other, if the same two people have two seperate babies so full siblings, well these two babies do not have the exact same DNA do they.

    • "Their DNA would be the same as a child who had the same exact mother and father" By same I just meant they'd appear to be just as close as full siblings (not 'same' like twins are, same as in the same closeness of full siblings). If my brother and I were DNA tested, wouldn't it be obvious we have the same parents? The children of the twins with the other parent in common would appear just as me and my brother appear, as full siblings even though one parent is different, right?

Ah right, yes it would be impossible to say for certain which one of the twins was their parent.

There was a DidYouKnow? post on Tumblr that I read recently. It said, "Did you know if two sets of twins have children, their offspring would be biological siblings, but legally cousins?"

They are both siblings and half siblings. It just depends on which angle you're looking at it from. This is good knowledge to have for medical records and such. But socially, they would still be half-siblings. It doesn't matter if the father's DNA is the same. Twins are still different people.
