OMG ME TOO. If I fall asleep on my back I have the worst dreams. my husband and I came to the conclusion that you are most vulnerable on your back because most all your vital organs are on your front side and maybe you feel exposed like how most animals won't expose their bellies, unless a house cat that trusts the family they live with.Maybe that could be why,it's like instinct. We kind of thought this could be a reason but we have no proof of this.

Sleeping on your back puts pressure in the back of your head, which can cause nightmares and other weird sleeping problems.

the reason i say it's "normal" is because you probably have sleep apnea. Lack of oxygen causes a panic, impending doom feeling. people with sleep apnea (myself included)often don't even know they have it. when you sleep on your back the tissue in the throat slides to the back and cuts off your airway, which also leads to feeling of "choking" or "Drowning". you might also wake up in a panic gasping for air. I used to wake up gasping for air in a complete panic, have nightmares, and wake up with headaches. i finally had a sleep study done and sure enough, i had apnea. i think you should have a sleep study done

I have the same issue, there is a history of sleep apnea in my family and I often wake gasping for air from nightmares. Solution: Don't sleep on your back.

if you go on wikipedia and type in nightmare it says that you need to be in an uncomfortable postion, have a fever, have "problems", or eat before you sleep to have a nightmare.

Hmm. I was opposite for many years. If I awoke from a nightmare, I was either on my side, or stomach. Now I can't sleep on my back.

If I fall asleep on a hot summer night, perfectly lined up on my back, I wake up on my side, normaly i'm also on a whole difrent part of my bed, and its almost always the same nightmare... So I think its normal.

This I've noticed happens to me all the time. I'm a stomach sleeper but when I fall asleep on my back guaranteed I will have weird dreams
