I've never been to the dentist

I'm a 17 year old female and my parents never took me to the dentist. I have three large cavities right now, otherwise my teeth look okay. They're a bit yellow. It's been something that's made me mad for a long time because my teeth hurt when I eat sweet things, and I don't want cavities to decay the only teeth I have. My parents don't have the money to take me anymore and we don't have dental insurance, so I was thinking about just getting my teeth worked on when I'm living on my own and have my own money. What do you think? I feel neglected.

  • You need to go now. Today. I'd wager you have a lot more going on in your mouth than just 3 cavities.

    Go before it gets worse.

And yes it's horrible that you're paying the price for your parents' neglect and stupidity. But all you can do at this point is to reverse the damage they've done.

Go to the dentist as soon as you can! I don't know where you live, but where I live, people with no money can get help with Medicaid. They pay your bill. And to get your prescriptions covered, choose a plan like Unison. Or just go to a free clinic. Either way, you're young, you don't want to lose your teeth! If you do lose your tooth, a new one will cost around 3 grand. And medicaid won't cover that!

    • Oh no. :( That would be awful. I just wish I knew where to start. People have recommended free clinics to me. I'd have to look up their location and well.. I'm not sure if I just walk in or if it's not completely free or... I don't know. I'll have to find out. Thanks for your input.

No problem. :) And I'm pretty sure they don't accept appointments. Just plan to wake up really early in the morning and try to be the first one there. It's a process but I would say it's worth it.

The Clinics people have given you information for, just call and ask how it works. You don't have to give them your name just to ask how it works. So, don't be embarassed.

Oral health is so important. It is a shame your parents could not afford to send you to the dentist, but you're so close to being on your own now, you need to seek out a solution yourself. Don't be angry towards them. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of injuring someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

So, be proactive and call those clinics. Just pick up the phone. Good luck.
